Woodcliff Lake, NJ – May 4, 2017… The BMW Performance Driving School with partners BMW M Performance Parts, IHG Rewards Club, and Continental Tire, today announces its entry in the 2017 One Lap of America with the BMW M3 Competition Package sedan. BMW Performance Center Driving Instructor, Michael Renner and Stephen Maguire of Atlanta will compete in the Luxury Sedan and Stock Touring categories. The 2017 One Lap of America competitors depart South Bend, Indiana on Saturday, May 6 to begin the 7 Day, 3,310 mile route, spanning fourteen states and consisting of Time Trials, Drag Racing, Skid pad Car Control and of course, long overnight transit stages. Renner and Maguire were the SSGT1 and Stock Touring Class winners in the 2016 One Lap of America behind the wheel of a BMW M2 and Mike Renner won the Truck/SUV and Stock Touring classes in 2015 piloting a BMW X6 M.

The 2017 BMW M3 Competition Package extends the performance envelope of the M3 sedan with an increased output of 444 hp allowing the M3 Competition Package to sprint from 0-60 mph in 3.8 seconds. The Competition Package features new suspension components with reconfigured driving modes (Comfort, Sport and Sport+). The standard Active M Differential and DSC Dynamic Stability Control are reconfigured to match the upgraded dynamics. Special lightweight M sports seats combine additional support on the track with exceptional comfort on the street.

The BMW Performance Driving School M3 One Lap of America entry will also be equipped with the M Performance Coilover Suspension and the M Performance Lightweight Titanium Exhaust. The M Performance Steering Wheel with Race Display and Shift Lights provides enhanced vehicle data to the driver while Carbon Fiber Front Splitter, Rear Spoiler and Mirror Caps further reduce weight and improve aerodynamics.

BMW M Performance Parts bring decades of innovative, dynamic design and Motorsports experience to BMW owners. The M Performance Parts collection of aerodynamic, interior, drivetrain, and chassis accessories enhance both the performance and appearance of BMW vehicles and are available as dealer installed accessories for new vehicle customers and current owners while maintaining full manufacturer’s warranty coverage.

The BMW Performance Center is the home of BMW’s Performance Driving School. Comprising two locations, Performance Center East in Greer, SC and Performance Center West in Thermal, CA, the BMW Performance Driving School offers a variety of driving classes that highlight the performance, responsiveness, and safety features in each BMW vehicle. D riving schools are offered in one and two day formats. They include a Teen Driving School, Car Control School, M School, and Advanced M School. Exclusive corporate driving events are also offered in many variants ranging from half day programs to three day events with on track driving and offsite tours and excursions.

It's interesting they decided not to add the 763Ms.

I noticed that car over on the side of the Performance Center when I was there yesterday. Should've gone and snapped some photos.

I think they probably wanted 19" all around just for a more durable setup (more protective sidewall) since they have to drive these for many miles over the period of the event. They could have used the available 19" rear 763M rather than the 20", but that would send a conflicting message since I think they specifically market the 20" rear at the M3/M4 the while they want the 19" to be used on the M2.

Is this an off-road course?

Considering 4 out of 7 of these promo shots feature the Continental brand, I have a feeling it has more to do with tire choice than anything else.

are those continental street tires (continental version of the MPSS tires?) what they will be competing in?

makes sense they are went with full coilovers... if for nothing else, to add in some front negative camber to save the tires

Yes they're present on mostly if not all of the cars we drive at BMW Performance Center out west

Part Numbers for BMW M Performance M3/4 (Competition Package) Suspension

Question for any reader - Can anyone give me the correct BMW Part Numbers for the complete M Performance Coilover Suspension? (Driving 2015 M4 coupe, non-ZCP). I've been watching BMW M Performance webpage, (shopBMWUSA.com), but have seen nothing for M3/4, but I believe it has been stated in numerous articles that BMW was releasing the suspension through BMW MPerformance as an option. That would beat depreciating a new M4 just to get the suspension pieces! Thanks Guys

No, but did you think that one lap of America literally meant there's an actual race track around the perimeter of the country?

The race in large part on public roads, and public roads have varying quality which can sometimes be poor. Lots of vehicle owners choose a higher profile tire for durability. I'm one of them. And for a race like this, I'd be especially concerned about not getting a rupture.

Sure, that could be it too if Continental doesn't have a suitable size for the 20" 763M.

Actually we don't race on public roads, those are considered transit sections between race venues. All timed competition happens at the track, be it a drag strip, autocross, skidpad, or circuit.

This is becoming a sickness! May means Mike & I leave our respective spouses for 10 days and travel over 3500 miles around the eastern United States competing in the Brock Yate’s One Lap of America.

We visit eight race venues, competing in 19 events throughout the week starting on Saturday at Tire Rack in South Bend, IN traveling as far south as Florida and then make our way back north to Michigan before returning to South Bend the following Saturday.

Each day we compete in two or three competitive events, ranging from time trials at race tracks, autocrosses and a drag races. All testing the capabilities of both car and driver.

For further punishment, we usually leave the track mid-afternoon and drive 500 to 600 miles to a hotel, (which in our case is an IHG hotel who is one of our sponsors), near the following day’s venue. So, as you can imagine driving this kind of distance means we arrive late at night, resulting in only a few hours sleep before waking up, having a quick shower and breakfast and heading to the track for a 8:30am start.

Each year we have chosen a vehicle from the BMW Performance Center fleet representing one of the current family of M models, and this year we selected a 2017 BMW M3 with Competition Package option. To this we’ve added a few goodies from the BMW M Performance Parts catalog, including front splitter, rear spoiler, coilover suspension, steering wheel with race display, carbon fiber mirror caps, and the titanium exhaust with carbon fiber exhaust tips. As for shoes, we’re running the recently released Continental Extreme Contact Sport.

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply street racing was involved. As you mention, participation in the event does require transit on public roads so it seems like a wheel setup that might make a compromise between durability and performance could be a real practical concern.

Anyway, good luck to you and your teammate! Thanks for dropping by to contribute.
