2015 F80 YMB Build Journal (Hwang_over)

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Decided I was going to log the progress of my "New to me" F80 M3 build.

Finished building my 2013 Aston Martin V8V this year, and ended up purchasing a 2015 YMB F80 M3 from a good friend of mine. He has quite the car collection and I had eyed this car up for years until he was ready to sell.
I timelapse all of my builds as they are fun to do and good memories of all of the hard work that is put into these machines.

Ill post the progress in this thread and potentially give reviews and my thoughts on the parts that I install.

I hope to garner some thoughts from the community as I plan for the future.

SPEC:
2015 YMB F80 M3
Sakhir Orange Interior
6 Speed Manual
38k miles
Exec Package
Carbon Roof
Carbon M Steering Wheel
Dinan Back Box
Car is PPF'd with XPEL

The finish on all of these carbon parts is amazing and I'm really happy with the way they have turned out.

Shout out to Alex over at Horizon Motorsports for his amazing customer service. We had exchanged so many emails as I was shopping around and he was responsive and honest about the parts. Made me feel comfortable ordering from him.

Next is figuring out what the install first.

More to come!

Both of these pieces came from Mashimarho. Upon delivery, it was an amazing finish and quality. Fast shipping too from Mashimarho.

For the install, they were both easy to install as you needed trim tools for both. I hate removing plastic because you never know how much force to use before it snaps. Also, every noise stops your heart as it sounds like it breaks every time.

However, I will say I am very OCD about fitment and there is a small gap that exists between the body and the strake itself.

The mirror cap again was a very straightforward removal. They have special instructions on the Mashimarho site for the installation, stating that the bottom tab must be installed first. I struggled with installing this cap as the tabs were not 100% in alignment, but eventually got it to fit. The gap is slightly off and it was a pain to get the corners to align.

I love these post and very clean car buddy. These cars are so well built, still looks new for a 9yr old car. Can't go wrong with 6MT either!

Decided to start with the rear of the car and install the rear trunk spoiler and rear diffuser.

Removing the OEM spoiler was fairly straightforward. Used a thin trimmer line vs a fishing line and a heat gun and it came off like butter. I've seen people struggle to manually remove the residual tape, so I decided to bust out the rubber wheel on a wired drill. Super easy and then I just cleaned up the area. Used Painter tape to mark off the area and give me a reference for the installation. This was a fairly easy install using double-sided tape all around the edges of the spoiler. The fitment was ok as one side has the tiniest gap vs the other side. Not sure anyone would notice but me, but I'm very OCD about this stuff.

The Rear Diffuser was a beast. Four pieces to install. The deflector above the exhaust tip was easy to remove but the installation was difficult as carbon is very rigid and the OEM holes did not align as well as I liked. But with enough elbow grease, it aligned. Next, I used speed nuts to install the main diffuser. The holes aligned great and with the speed nuts and new hardware, it was tightly secured. I feel like there should have been a way to attach the main diffuser to the upper deflector but there wasn't. (Some people have screwed a screw directly into both pieces) The side flares were a combination of the double-sided tape and screws to the existing OEM holes.

Both the carbon spoiler and rear diffuser were purchased at Horizon Motorsports.

Went with the Performance V1 Carbon Fiber Side Skirt. Wanted something to go with the body lines of the car and nothing to over the top that flared out. This side skirt is very subtle and just adds the perfect contrast to the body.

The kit came with double-sided tape and self-taping screws. I wanted to go a more secure route, so I decided to remove the side skirt and buy new SS nuts and bolt hardware.

I mocked up the side skirt off of the car and held it together with clamps. Then drilled the holes that aligned with the side skirt. Fastened the bolt, washer, and nut and reinstalled it to the car.

The side skirt interferes with two of the rear T30 plastic bolts which makes it difficult to reinstall once the side skirt is attached. If you are self-tapping it directly into the side skirt without removing it, it would cover those T30 bolts. Not a big deal unless you want to remove the OEM side skirt in the future. Unscrewing self-tapping screws from a plastic body will not hold as strong as the initial tap IMO, hence why I went with the new hardware.

Side Skirts were purchased from Horizon Motorsports

Finishing off the kit by installing the front splitter and upper splitter. Purchased the V1 Style Front Lip and V2 upper splitters from Horizon Motorsports. Then had them PPFd before installing. These were the easiest to install out of the entire exterior kit. The fitment was also almost perfect. I had to source SS screws for the original OEM holes across the center of the splitter and then had to tap into the corners as those were new holes. The upper splitter was installed using double-sided 3M tape. Careful, as you only get one shot at setting in place, otherwise its a pain to remove.

This finishes off the exterior kit for the M3. Next moving on to either wheels and suspension or power upgrades.
