its not because they are going back to heritage. BMW makes a lot of I6 engines. it saves cost to make a M4 and a 335i more similar with production. look at the new M engine and look at a 335i engine.

the problem is not a 8 cylinder Vs 6 cylinder thing. its these new small displacement turbo engine. its completely new to M cars!

the M3 v8 is more similar to the E46 I6. than the E46 I6 is to the F80 I6 turbo
To add to this point, the idea that the car's block is shared with the standard 3 series w/ same bore / stroke in this case and on the same assembly line, that's disappointing. Engine is no longer bespoke and built exclusively by the M division (e46 M engine, e92 M engine).

But I have to say impressed with the other tech additions and weight reduction.

Remember this about shared components?

Quote:
The M3/M4 is brimming with dedicated parts - Albert Biermann says that the content of standalone components amounts to roughly 50 per cent.
http://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...55&postcount=1
Significant cost-cutting is achieved when the percentage of shared components between regular 3er model and M3/M4 model is increased from ~20% to 50%.

I wonder why there hasn't been more info on the 'S55' engine.
How does it differ from the N54 introduced 7.5 years ago?
Just the addition of valvetronic II, that differentriated the F10 M5 from the 550i for about a year?

you remember this.

that new engine is for. cost cutting and getting fuel economy. PERIOD

if MPG and cost cutting was not a problem . we would see a reworked S65 V8. NO QUESTIONS ASKED.

do i feel but hurt ? not really. in fact i think BMW will feel more butt hurt when i buy a different brand.

sorry i am not spending 80k to hear a 3.0L I6. not happening.

Do you think the S55 is inferior to the S65? Or is the N54 when it came out, inferior to the S65, and why? I don't think so. Not in real life that is.

I remember the M1 having 277PS @ 6500rpm back in the days and an E30 M3 having 200PS @ 6750 rpm from a 4 potter. Both great cars/engines. But not good enough? Because no V8?

And I was spending 100k euros on a E90 M3(2008), trading in my N54 335i(60k euros when new)
That won't happen again.....never again, worst trade I did in my life

Cheers

1) different internals
2) bespoke and incredibly robust cooling system (7 heat exchangers / oil coolers and new liquid to air intercooling system, completely different than n54/55 and blows it away)
3) larger turbos
4) new tuning algorithms aiding in keeping the turbos spooled even when off throttle

Very different, and IMO very awesome. The fanboys will see and will open their eyes to this car once its released and they have the chance to drive it.

Not crazy at all, IMO. I'm considering the same thing. Either BMW provides more space so that's my main debating factor at the moment. However, more is known about the reliability of the 991 at this point.

Now having said that, and depending on the price difference, I'm still not sure which I would choose.
The fact that the 4 series looks so close to a 6 series is what turns me off about it. I have not seen one in person so maybe that would change my mind, but in pictures I agree it looks a little too bloated. If I'm getting a big car then it might as well have 4 doors.

Not sure why though the Coefficient Drag went up instead of down on this new model. In this case they did not improve. I thought that the Coefficient Drag was rather on the high side when compared to say an current E550 coupe where it is around .27 or so. Would have been nice to see the new M4 under .30 for Coefficient Drag.

you still not grasping what i have been saying on multiple forum threads. its not a 8 cylinder VS 6 cylinder thing.
it never was!

it was the idea that M made a engine that was very different from the rest. put all the power specs aside. look E60 M5s. they were putting V10 engines in there M cars! that insane. Thats what made me want a BMW M car.

the new engine is going to be a solid engine and the M4 is going to be a ass kicking car. in the name of cost cutting and getting better MPG. they made us a engine that is to similar to 335i.

for me its the principal. nothing to do with how fast the car is.

High cD is usually correlated with downforce (actually low lift, since street cars almost never produce actual downforce). I don't know if you've ever driven the E class at high speed but it's much, much less stable than my M3 at 150+ miles an hour. That kind of thing is important to M buyers, I would argue more important than slightly better fuel economy and lower wind noise.
