Hey guys just found this thread. I'm going to put in a plug for the Turn 2 lapping event at The Ridge on Thursday August 4th. Proceeds go to Camp Goodtimes charity. A two week camp on Vashon island for kids affected by cancer. The $300 fee goes directly to keep the camp open and make it free of charge for the families. Plus it's a tax write-off. But the biggest bonus is that the kids are at the track and you get to take them for rides around The Ridge. Truly, the most amazing track day you can have. Go to motorsportsreg and sign-up i'll be there in my M4 and my S2000.

Can't be there this year due to a planned scuba weekend, but Tom makes this event incredible. Have fun, give to a great cause, see some amazing cars (a helicopter showed up last year), and feel great about yourself helping out kids in need.
BTW, I'm at the Ridge on June 30th for the Cantrell day. |

Cool! I'll be there then too! Look for my YMB M4 by the red canopy. I always have an extra folding seat or two so feel free to hang out with the crew.

Can someone confirm for me if I need a helmet + inspection for the car control clinic? I vaguely remember seeing it when I was registering but on the puget sound chapter it says it's not needed. This will be my first time at any BMWcca event. thanks!

Just found this thread. What a great / fun / hot day today at Pacific Raceways.
Larryn - Nice to meet you. Once I get my video uploaded and edited I'll post the clip of you going by me to play with the GT3s ZPinhead... hope that front tire holds the tread just a little longer :-D

Lus8aPilot, cool to meet you as well, and awesome meeting many of you today!! What great day.. Hot, but fun!
I didn't bother timing anything today, and lots of people to play with! I took a student with me on my last session and really ripped some fast laps. |

Lesson learned: Factory tires with 23K miles (and 10 track days) + 90F Degree track day + early throttle (borderline understeer) in turn 2&8 = chunking of the front/passenger tire

Chunking is normal on tracking/pushing street tires beyond their intended use. Google "chunking tires".
You can minimize that while tracking street tires by doing a couple things, but you're always at risk... First, warm up your tires, and don't go "balls-out" while they're still cold. Warm tread is softer tread, and less prone to chunking (though it can still happen). Next, notice that it primarily happens on the outside edges? That's telling you that you need more negative camber. I assume this is a stock car without camber plates? Lastly, you're asking your tires to do what they were not intended to do. Dedicated track tires rarely chunk, due to their nature of being a softer rubber compound designed for heat cycles. |

2.5 degree negative camber with GC camber plates, still can't help.
On top of what larryn said, this is a horrible tire (Conti 5P). It become greasy very easily and the MPSS I saw on other stock M3/4 on Pacific raceways look much better than mine. It's at only 5k miles but the grip level has dropped a lot recently. I have a goal, that if I can do Pacific raceways less than 1:40 (still 1.5 seconds to go) with stock tires/suspension/engine, I then allow myself to upgrade to better tires. With the grip level dropping, it is not looking positive. Quote:
