VRSF Front Mount Intake behavior

Hello guys,

i tried to use the search function but couldn't find a match for my question.

The VRSF front mount intake, is there any problem to run the system and it starts to rain? I have concerns about that the engine soaks water in and after that there will be problems etc.

Maybe someone of you had already experience with this system during raining driving?

Been running a front mount intake for 4 years, through torrential rain, snow, and sleet. No issues.

I have a buddy who has front-mount intakes. I am not as keen on the look as many people are, but he confirms two main facts:
- the air temps are as cool or cooler than the cold-air sealed OEM solution, based on IATs he frequently measured (and the sound is amazing)
- water is not an issue, even during heavy rain
I suspect the latter is because even if water does get through the filters, which may or may not happen, you have to remember that the temps are increasing rather steadily as the air approaches the turbos and into the motor - eventually the water is vaporized. Remember how hot the turbos run, even when you're not flooring it. EVEN IF some droplets miraculously get past the turbo and into your charge pipe, and even past the throttle body into the motor, remember that this is exactly what water injection does. In other words, small, atomized water droplets sneaking into your engine is ok.

He pulled the turbos out when he was upgrading them and the OEM turbos look no worse for wear (they are not rusted or clearly water-damaged).

For these reasons, I am considering this mod, even though as I mentioned, I don't love the look as much as others - maybe I'll find a black filter option.

For those of you with Front Mounts, which one do you have and how often do you clean/replace the front filters? All of the ones I’ve seen used with the cotton filters have looked so dirty.

I have them and have had them for 9 months. No issues. As far as cleaning, the filters i have (AP) i just blow them out and go on with driving.

Great info!

When you say blow them out, you mean uninstall the kidney grill filters and then use something like a air hose and blow outward?

Yeah I pop out the grills, take the filter off and use an air lien to blow them out. The filters I use are a dry element and the instructions say 32psi of air to clean them.

Popping them out means loosening the top part of the bumper by removing the screws, and then wiggling your hand in there, to get at the tabs, right? Or is there some faster way you know of to pop out the grills? On my F23 they are a pain, but I haven't tried on the F83 yet.

You’re probably right as that’s the only way to take the kidney grills off. It’s not that hard unless you have ham hands

All the screws up top then pushing out the kidney grills. I use an electric wrench so I only takes me about 5 minutes to have it all apart.

The same ones that came with the intake. They are a dry element and blue in color. Filter is same consistency as a K&N

You have the VRSF fmi? It comes with red filters or not? As i can see it on pictures they are always red.

No I have AP (agency power) mentioned above. The filters VRSF come with are still a dry element paper filter if I remember right. I looked at those before I bought the AP
