You want a nice smooth path for the exhaust gases to get out as fast as possible. An x-pipe would introduce turbulence and create back pressure. An x-pipe is really only useful in a NA engine because you can take advantage of the scavenging effect on the exhaust pulses. The turbine blades cancel out these pulses and what you want is to a smooth path on the way out.

I have actually driven 2 variants of the new Jag convertible (same engines as the new coupe) and they both sounded amazing. Problem with the rest of the car is that it's more of a GT than anything in terms of the ride, shifting, etc. It's really meant for the older driver who wants a 2-seater but isn't looking for a proper sports car (ie. Cayman/Boxster). Anyone who is seriously considering an M3/M4 won't be the right buyer for the Jag and vice-versa when you consider the sport vs GT characters and 2 seat difference between the cars. But, in all fairness, comparing almost any car to the new Jag in terms of exhaust sounds is a losing proposition, as the exhaust is probably the BEST aspect to the new Jag from a fun to drive perspective. All of that being said, I REALLY hope some new owners try some more mods so we can find a mod and/or aftermarket exhaust that sounds good on the new M3/M4, as my E93 M3 with the OEM Exhaust Mod (non-perforated) puts a smile on my face everytime I drive because of the exhaust sound. And I'm concerned that the new M3/M4 won't do the same based on these preliminary reviews... |
