Whats done at the second oil service?
My car had the break in oil service done at around 1200 miles and is due for the second oil service in another 1500 miles (has 5K on the odo now). I am wondering what is part of the second and third service so I can judge if its worth my time to bring the car in or just DIY. My dealer is a good hour drive away and I would have to take a day off work just to bring the car in so if its just for a standard oil change i rather just pay out of pocket and do it myself or locally.

Basically this is the 1st service (oil + filter + microfilter) for the 2nd service: Oil + oil filter + microfilter + spark plugs, and also as usual check lights, tyres, brakes, ...

In the U.S. plugs are the third oil change / third service / 3 years / 30k miles, not including run in. 1200miles - Run in 10k or 1st year 20k or 2nd year 30k or 3rd year - Sparks done this service Last edited by JamesGames; 04-12-2019 at 11:05 AM.. |

Yea that's odd, that's almost double the interval in the U.S, and longer than the old 15k per year oil change guidelines BMW used to do.

This doesn't make sense. Your car must've been purchased used if this is your second service and you're due for plugs. New it was bought originally in 2016, did service 1 2017, service 2 in 2018, and 2019 your plugs due (now).

Yes purchased used one month ago with 4500 miles. It was originally purchased in December of 2016. 3rd service or not, since the maintenance plan doesn't carry to new owners and they quoted me $700 for the plug change, this isn't enough miles to consider a plug change. They assume the car has closer to 30k miles on it at 3rd service. I won't hit 30k miles for 4 or 5 more years.

It might be recommended if there are problems but then they should find the root cause and replace, these spark plugs should last 80.000 km but are replaced every 2nd oil service at least in Europe where services are done every 30.000 km.

Sounds like they just wanted to make some money off you. Spark plugs just don't go bad over time if they aren't being used so I can't see why a car with less thank 5K miles would need them changed.

I've certainly had others in my lifetime that would have given me a dozen stupid reasons why it needs to be done. It's nice to deal with people once in a while that can read you enough to know you're not a fool. Like when I bought this car the finance woman tried to sell me a wheel and tire protection package for $2500. I laughed and she moved on... |

I guess they literally interpreted the “change spark plugs at 2nd interval” but the service interval after the break in period does not coubt as the 1ste and if you bring in the can for oil changes between these service intervals it does not count either.
