Flying to take delivery?

Hey Gang,

Out of curiosity, I wanted to know how many of you decided to fly in to a different state and take delivery of your BMW M4 instead of putting it on a truck. Also how long was the drive and what did you do to make the best of it?

I am trying to figure out how crazy a New Jersey to Florida drive would be.

I just recently flew to Charlotte North Carolina to pick up my car and drove it home which is about 12 hours. It was a fun trip. Got to know the car. Played around with settings. Tried to incorporate WOT whenever possible. Lol

That's nothing. I flew out to Arizona to buy a car unseen and drove it back to Miami. It was one of the most exciting and memorable experiences. I can tell you that driving the I-10 through Texas was one of the most boring drives I've ever done in my life.

I flew from FL to BMW Performance Center to get mine, which is fairly common. From there my wife and I drove about an hour and 1/2 west to Asheville for a week then about 750 miles home from there.

NJ to FL shouldn’t be too bad depending on weather. (Many) Years ago while in college I routinely drove from RI to Miami in shitbox cars, most of which lacked a/c.

The only thing that would give me pause is timing due to winter weather if this is something imminent. Presumably the car has summer tires on it. Not going to want to hit snow or super cold weather for long stretches.

if you have the time, absolutely do it. Get the car wrapped in PPF; at least the nose if you’re going from NJ to FL. Detailer’s domain.

I live in Raleigh NC and I just bought my F80 M3 on Dec. 27th, 2019. I flew up to Chicago and drove it home (900 miles). I thought about putting it on a truck but it cost too much and I've heard horror stories on the car getting damaged in transit.

I am a person that likes to take airplane instead of driving for anything over 3-4 hours. This was a 13 hour trip and I loved every minute of it. Driving in the new car and going through some WV mountains was awesome!

It wasn't an M4 but my wife and I picked up two cars (X5 and Giulia QV) in Chicago last year and drove them back home to Atlanta.

I also picked up my C63 Coupe in MD in Nov and drove it back home. It's definitely fun getting to know your new car on a road trip.

PPF looks like a $800 starting point based off research. At that cost you might as well put the car on a truck.

Have any one of you done PPF or just drove it home?

I bought mine in arizona and trucked it back to PA. Ialways buy salt free cars and drive or truck them back. Worth it to get the car you want.

I just drove mine home and plan to make a couple of round trips to Asheville again this year. I may have picked up a chip or two. Probably had a rock or two hit the windshield (but not cause a crack) too. This is the first car I’ve had in a while where I didn’t get PPF. Full disclosure - mine is a lease I plan to return, with only a small chance of buying it out. I did put PPF on my last lease though.

Your car will get some paint chips daily driving in South Florida. There is construction everywhere. Driving style also contributes - don’t tailgate. So if you want to avoid paint chips by getting PPF anyway, sure get it before the ride home. But if you aren’t planning on it anyway, I wouldn’t get it just to avoid chips on the ride home.

I have also read some posts of people putting Trakktape on for long distance drives. There is also some spray on stuff I think. Effort and investment levels depend on how much you care about chips.

The point of ppf is to avoid road debris from damaging the paint. Well, at least 1200 miles of it. Is this a new car? I’ve wrapped my front end, and also have wrapped entire cars. Some people do not see the value in it, which I understand.

Funny. I did the exact same thing back in early September, though it took me a little over 11 hours only stopping for gas. Dealer for you? I purchased mine from tambat at BMW of Northridge. Awesome guy, awesome dealership experience!

Not saying it's not worth the value, but for the same price I could just put it on a truck and just wait?

I was really picky in the color, packages, and 6mt. I found it near Chicago at BMW of Barrington.

Music and podcasts kept my drive going and I stayed in WV for 5-6 hours to sleep but got going at 6am and got to see the beautiful sunrise in the WV mountains

Just bought an F82 from SoCal and almost drove it back to NYC. Decided to just get it transported and not run the risk.

I flew from Venice to Frankfurt and took a bus (the horror!) to Weurzburg to pick up my M3. The effortless drive home was a bit over 500 miles.

Picked up my previous E92 M3 from houston and drove it back to NY in 3 days. Made stops at New Orleans, ATL, North Carolina, DC. It was a blast but I recommend you have a co-pilot. You go insane. If you can stretch out your days, take it through the tail of the dragon coming back up.

P.S. 3M tape the front end

Chicago to Austin with a forced overnight stay on the way due to snow storm.
Potential Rock chips on bumper could be an issue.

I was pretty picky too, just couldn't find anything closer to home. I hit WV around 11pm or so, really fun drive through the mountains with very little traffic. Almost ran out of gas in Winston-Salem, miscalculated the availability of gas in the wee hours of the morning. Really not that bad of a drive considering the distance and the fact I did it in one go. I was a little worried going in that sitting in the f80 seats (non-cp) for that long would be a painful experience, but was pleasantly surprised at how comfortable they were. No issues with back pain or anything. I test drove a few CP cars, my wife really hated the CP seats, and while I didn't hate them, I did find those weird cut-outs in the seat back to be uncomfortable.
