(TCO) Vs E92 m3/ RS4/ 25k dollar car
i'm pretty financially risk adverse, and do think the f80 m3 is a bit excessive for me, but make good enough money and can afford it.
I have a new one on order but am consistently tempted to buy medium mileage/ high mileage 08-11 m3/ rs4 etc, lets say for 25k-30k. i just find it so much easier to walk into the dealer, sign up ( i do get a great corporate lease, so about 50 bucks off the best negotiated lease rate) and don't have to worry about any maintenance. Has anyone been in this same dilemma. Any car over the 40k range, i would just jump straight to the m3 ( final negotiated price around 60) and keep it longer. Anyone else been in this same dilemma or am i crazy? For instance my friend who runs a dealership has a very clean 1 owner e90 m3 with 80k miles he'd probably sell to me for 23k . Thoughts: what would the TCO on a car like that would be over the 3 years (Cap cost 25,000 assume with tax) 3 year depreciation at 4,000 per year? maintenance 3,000 per year? it seems like it adds up to be pretty darn close to a 740 dollar payment on a f80 m3 |

Do you care about having the latest tech?
Id say it's hard to be unhappy with an E90 if you don't care about the latest iDrive etc. Not a fan of the RS4, but similar story if you like that car. Personally I'm really impressed with the new iDrive system and HUD and can't live without them now

i'm probably not going to back out of my m3, too easy just to lease it. but if something comes along i might grab it... also the m3 is sweet, but it's not like a porsche or anything. i'd feel better about spending 25k on a m3 and having a new one come up vs. spending 89k on a m4 convertible and having a 911 turbo or f430 pull up next to me!

consider getting a cheaper new car like a camaro or mustang?
cost of ownership on a 80k m3 may not be very cheap considering that german cars are more expensive to maintain. considering total cost of ownership also needs to factor time of ownership. if you are looking at 3 years only, it may not be worthwhile to get a used m3. if leasing is in the picture, you can save money by leasing an rc-f perhaps. i don't think they are selling well and seen some pretty aggressive leases for them.

Great points - repair bills on an 80k mile M3 may be high. Depends on how the previous owner(s) treated it, maintained it, wrecked it, etc.
Same with the RS4.
