I just saw this commercial for the KITH M4 in the G forum. Please, please tell me that the car doesn't really come with that giant logo on the CF roof and the defaced ///KITHM4 badge on the back. This is worse than I thought...its not juat a branding exercise with some subtle logos. This is a total sellout. This is embarrassing. Please tell me this is just an ad, and it isnt so.

Watching the two launch videos back to back is pretty sad. I'd wager that the first video portrays the BMW brand that everyone on this board knew and supported. The F80 makes me say "wow, now thats a car I want" and here I am...2 F80s later.
The G80 immediately makes me not want to be associated with anything about it or BMW as a brand. What a disgrace. I find it quite comical how little they showed the car and the grilles. |

C/D: How did Hyundai get to you?
AB: They just called me on a Friday evening. I said, "No, I'm not interested." I started to think about Hyundai and what it was doing with Kia, and also about how far South Korea had come in a short time. But the key thing was that M was heading somewhere I didn't want to go. The guys who used to do crazy projects were gone. So I was thinking maybe Hyundai isn't a bad idea at the end of my career. Then a few things happened, like the double-clutch transmission was canceled for the M5, and I thought, "This is not my game anymore," and I left. My plan had been to retire after this M5 launched, but suddenly I had a new adventure. https://www.caranddriver.com/feature...bert-biermann/ |

This thread has taken me down memory lane! As an older millennial, the BMW videos/movies from the early 2000's were formative in my love for M vehicles and were part of the aspiration for me eventually getting one. For the longest time, the E39 M5 was the car I wanted. When I could finally afford one, it didn't make as much sense to get a 17+ year vehicle as a daily. The F80 ZCP 6 speed I bought felt like the spiritual successor in both size, looks and feel. Hopefully the G80 and the marketing behind it are just a blip in the radar for enthusiasts like me, and BMW ends up making something that 'feels' like their older generation of cars in the future!

how is that video even remotely relevant to "Motorsport"? if BMW wants to rebrand, they should rename this division to something more consistent with the brand.

LoL I could not watch more then 30 seconds of that awful G8X video. I couldn't even keep a straight face lol.
The F8X launch video got me pumped up and made me want to run out and buy an F80 M3! Not just saying that because I have one.

From my 16 year old son...
1st video: clear message (a DD that evokes feelings of the track), good look at the cars, dated camerawork. 2nd video: modern camera work but way too many transitions (they should have lingered on the car shots more), what's up with the crazy dude (and girl... he also saw the M4 video), and what are they trying to say about this car? He also googled the specs as we were talking. "What? 400lbs heavier... they are going the wrong direction!" as he shakes his head. Today, I'm feeling that I'm doing an okay job parenting...

you can see it easily, common drivetrains, interior design, cluster, and overpriced products like M8 models. My guess is they also used heavier cheaper body panels to decrease cost and increase margins like replacing cf driveshaft with the steel one on F80. They don't care for engineering anymore. It is shortsided decision driven by greed that will cost them. By wattering down your products you lose credibility. We in engineering make fun of marketing and business because they want to often manipulate the numbers. You can't manipulate math but they don't take many math classes. Biermann is an engineer with tremendous experience. They were releasing wild products because they were experimenting and pushing the limits, although the made a mistake here and there, and customers accepted that because they were so good. What a loss!! |
