Opinions on 240i xDrive compared to M4?
Got my first BMW in January and I’m in my late 40s. It’s a 240ix, Alpine Whiite, summer tires, black wheels, i like the look. Commuter car look from behind but whatever. Point of my post was, over in 2 series section I posited my car vs M4 on a tight track, and seems the consensus is, can’t hang. Are the M3s and 4s that you folks are into that much better? I wish my car had a good weight advantage, mine has to be lighter but I don’t know how much. Clearly not enough. Anyway, I ramble. Cheers.

Given that you just bought your car, just enjoy it and don't look back. Stop browsing m4 forums. You already know the answer.

if you're that concerned with weight and tight track driving why would you get an awd model? you live in cali...
The 240ix with its awd and B58 does make a good drag race machine with a bit of tuning though. There is a big difference between any regular bmw and a M model in my opinion. more than just the numbers would suggest.

I've driven an M240 and M3 ZCP back to back on a very short road course at a BMW driving school. They aren't even close IMHO. Plus, the throttle response on the 240 is somewhat spongy and delayed, which makes throttle control challenging, where the S55 is very linear. The M240 is a very nice car, but the ZCP M3/4s are pretty great and operating on a different level, as intended.

Reading between the lines, you seem to somehow think that a tighter "track" would suit the 2-series better than an M3/4. Why? Because it doesn't allow as much space for open throttle, or you think the RWD Ms won't fare as well? The Ms will still take the corners better, accelerate quicker, lose less power in the turns, etc.
It's not just the power. The Ms have a weight advantage, gearing advantage, suspension advantage, braking advantage, aero advantage, tire advantage, etc. Don't get me wrong, I like the 240i, but one of these two was built for performance. The other was built to be a sporty mid-range commuter car. Basically, not a chance.

Lol there's no chance Habibi. A purebred M car is in a completely different league. Drive one and you will see for yourself. Cool car though.

I had a 335xi 6MT (after having a 335 RWD 6MT) and the switch to AWD for that car was for convenience during the winter. I now have an F80 that I drive year round and while the Nokians are impressive, M3 is nowhere near as good as the 335xi was in the winter. |

Thank you folks all for chiming in and taking time to respond. So end of day, can't hang. It's all good, what I'm most curious about, after reading and learning is the weight at the end of the day. I bought this car, and was kind of surprised that it is as heavy as it is. At say 3600-3700 pounds for a 240ix, how do the larger (numerically) models come in less. They are bigger, but it seems some weigh less as well. People are going to be really annoyed with me, I know and I don't mean it. BMW must have really done some engineering to keep the bigger car weigh less. That's great, and quite honestly, I'm a bit disappointed, because I thought I might be getting a bit of the lightest 2019 offering in the US in a 240ix. It's all good and what I can afford anyway, paid for 100K service/warranty and will enjoy this daily driver.

OP, now that you know the theoretical answer, go track your car and find out.
Lower power car with AWD is a lot easier to push hard and max out than a big power RWD car |
