Debadging devalues?

So I've always wondered why people do it on certain cars.
Especially on new cars, even more on M's. It just seem as if the car is missing something.
I've always assumed when I saw it on say a "328i", that the owner didn't want you to know if it was a 328i or a 335.... I guess after reading around, some think it makes the car look cleaner. But I've noticed something at bmw dealerships, debadging a car can cost you more than a cleaner look is worth. I've also seen cars get appraised more with badges that don't even belong on the car, like a 650I being badged with a ///M just because the pass owner wanted it on there. Has anyone else seen or heard of this sort thing happening.

Its a piece of plastic and annoying tape. I doubt the reinstallation could be fucked up even by me.

Yup!

I can also recommend a good mechanic and pay the first reinstallation (an hour of labor) if the owner of the devalued m car will show up and explain to the man of my shop why he's putting it back on.

I wouldn't of course comment much...

To each his own but to me it looks like the car just had a paint job after an accident and is waiting for the badges to arrive.

Not quite. The one on the left hand side must be a mirror image of the one on the right to achieve proper feng shui.

Most people debadged their 328i/528i emblems and get dual exhaust to make their car seems like a 335i/535i/550i. Hell, some even convert their front end to an M3/M5. I would not debadge a real M car. I paid good money for that M3 badge.

JnoSol, you paid good money for the badge or the M3/4?

I would assume it would devalue the car to most here in the US. Maybe $50 or what ever that badge costs to replace, but that's about it.

I have always liked the look of a debadged car, but I know it is a very subjective issue. The badges are just double-sided tape, so simply re-install it if you are trading the car in. The only downside is that you won't have the original badge to get the alignment perfect, but there are plenty of photos out there for you to get close enough.

I finally found what may be a reasonable argument in favour of debadging my car. I have modded it with enough genuine bmw parts for my z4 3.0i to be mistaken for a 3.0si. I don't care so much about the manifold, but upgrading from 300 mm to 325 mm discs could be problematic. Think of it. I take my 3.0i to have a brake service. I have a feeling some young mechanic might try to make 300 mm rotors fit, or waste time on the rack with the wrong parts.

If you're servicing at the dealership this mistake will not get made based on the "look" of the car; they order parts based on the vin.

Further, if you are taking it to a mechanic who is working ont eh car and putting parts on based on the logo on the back, might want to find a new mechanic...

just my $0.02

I ordered my car debadged so that I don't have to remove the original chrome badge to install the iND black badge!

Some of this sounds really silly. Especially when valuing a car, there are obviously many other ways to check the model of a car without looking at the rear badge. So to appraise one without doing due diligence is downright foolish.

Some people de badge for a cleaner look. Others to deceive. I can't really think of any other reason why.
