Is this normal/acceptable on the M Perf Gloss Black Grill?

So just got the OEM M Performance Grills for M3. They look great except that it looks like only the surround is spray painted gloss black and the insert has just been reused. They could have just sold the surrounds for much cheaper and called them the M Performance surrounds. Why charge for the inside grill if it's the exact same thing?

The second thing I noticed was that while the paint is uniform and done well on the areas that will be visible, they seem to have gotten really sloppy when painting the back of the grill surround. Some sections have excess paint vs other areas which have no spray at all. They even over-sprayed on the back of the grill insert. I understand that these areas will be hidden after install but is this normal given how much they charge for these parts?

BMW probably considers any surface that isn't visible to be a "B" surface and won't require a perfect spray on said B surface. Probably done for efficiency and cost saving purposes.

They don't even paint the front fenders inside the door jams - why would they paint the back of a grill?

That's basically what I'm saying. They aren't concerned with it. And really they shouldn't. You're never going to see it anyway.

This is normal. I've been through two pairs and both pairs had paint missing on the inside.

If you just wanted the gloss black surrounds, you could have ordered F32 M Performance Grills and swapped the chrome surrounds on your F8x with the F32 surrounds. Much cheaper than purchasing a whole new set of F8x grills.

Yes, I didn't do my research. Saw that after the fact. Also, I didn't realize that the factory grill inserts that come with the car are the same gloss black as what comes on the M Performance grill.

I agree with you on that but in that case none of it should be painted. But it has overspray all over the place, more in some areas and none in others. I don't have a problem with this but just surprised I guess.

I personally don't know whether it's normal or not, but I'm in agreement with most everybody else in this thread in that i wouldn't waste a moment being concerned about it.

Edit: as to whether it's acceptable... to me is perfectly acceptable for an unvisible portion of car component to not have the same level of finish add the visible portions.

P.s. the underside of your bumper covers dont look nearly as good as the topside does

Understood guys. No need to take this thread to the childish antics that are prevalent on m3post. It was a simple question and it's been answered. Move on.

It's not a complaint. I stated I am okay with it. Read the first paragraph in my post and then read the thread. Was a simple question for which I have an answer so move on. Don't feel obligated to add to what everyone has already posted.

Yeah, not trying to give you too much of a hard time.....more just having fun with the way these posts inevitably go.

(I still genuinely don't understand the one about 'can I drive my car in the rain'.....but maybe the OP on that one was Noah and he has some legitimate concerns about precipitation or something...?)

This is why it's better to buy the IND black surrounds. Sure you get 435i surrounds painted black, but you're going to reuse the stock double slats anyway and, from the photos and description of these OEM M perf grills, IND's paint is MUCH better. My IND surrounds were completely painted, uniform and glossy all around. All that and much cheaper to boot.
