BM3 and i-step version

Done some searching around, but didn't see anything pertaining to this:
Ive got an early model 2015, very low miles. Had only been to the dealer for the initial 1500 mile service and then one oil change thereafter before the factory warranty ran out. As a result, my car has never had any I-step updates.

Im toying with the possibility of going with BM3. Does the I-step have anything to do with tuning? If I’m running the earliest F80 factory tune, can I still utilize BM3 and load a new tune? Im mainly interested in adding downpipes and utilizing BM3 to get rid of the CEL.

Can I use BM3 without issue, or do I need to bring my car to a more recent software level? Or does I-step version have nothing to do with the ECU parameters that BM3 will modify?
