To many Dam malfunction codes on these new cars that it makes you nervous and scared when you see them pop up. BMW needs to remove all these B.S. sensors that makes you run to the dealership. Can any body say conspiracy? Ummmmmm.

This is nonsensical. If you think the HUD will help prevent a money shift you have no clue what a money shift is. By the time you see the incorrect gear pop up on the HUD the damage is already done.

You don't think I've driven a manual transmission before?! What you're saying doesn't make sense. From a mechanical standpoint it's a stupid statement. It's ok...keep telling yourself the HUD will prevent a money shift.

Again go drive a manual M, shift at redline while watching HUD and then come and make a comment whether my statement is stupid or not. My statement is based on facts

In the scenario where you are ripping through gears like power shifting or not even using the clutch, the last thing you are worrying about is making sure you're in the right gear. Adrenaline takes over and mistakes are made HUD or not.

I get what you're saying but honestly if you're able to rely on the gear indicator while making a redline shift to confirm you're in the right gear before you release the clutch then you my friend are superhuman.

I've redlined my current F80 hundreds of times and the F80 prior and they both didn't have HUD. Even if they did I am too concentrated on the road to look at a little number telling me which gear I just threw it in; at that point it's all feel. You should just know which angle the lever just fell into and if it felt right or not.

The shifter self centers between 3rd & 4th. Even with fast shifts I give just enough force to pop out of gear but let the shifter center then just enough to pull into 4th. It happens fast enough for me to let it help. I'll never say never but maybe I'm not shifting fast enough...I'm also not treating the car like a horse that won't run fast enough...

dont make those statements , it works for me and thats what it counts. The HUD is directly in line of vision and no reason it cannot work , you dont look at the shifter while changing gears but look at the road and cant miss it. The moment u put it in gear its shows up in HUD whether u have released the clutch or not.

All us DCT owners looking at this thread like:

jk, but seriously, I love manuals, my M4 is my first non-manual and everyday I wish I got the manual instead.

In that scenario you're already abusing the car, so yes if driving like a plank you've got to expect that you'll do something stupid.

Guys that have never RACED in a competition scenario and only driven on the street for fun will never understand what a "money shift" is, so I can understand their confusion. Heck, people at the track told me about money shifts when I was starting out in racing and I thought they were silly. I'm like put the shifter in the wrong gear?, yeah right LOL! Then, a year later, I money shifted my E36 "racing" a Viper in DE.

With all that being said, since the OP did this on the street, it begs the question who was he racing? LOL?

From the lack of responses by OP, i'd say the outcome of that money shift is evident.

Customer at our dealership had a fun little moneyshift.
Oil looked like glitter.
After a bit of a long process Insurance ended up covering the damage.
Initially insurance said they won't cover it due to it being a mechanical failure.
That's where I think they screwed up. Because BMW obviously said it was due to the driver.
So insurance ended up covering the cost of a brand new engine.

I didn’t know that insurance could or would cover a new engine if it was driver error.I guess it kind of makes sense if you make a driving error and get into an accident they fix the cosmetics and mechanical parts .
Now the question is what will his insurance renewal be ?

If you are driving on the race track with lots of g-force with car's weight on somewhere weird confusing your brain's sense of center, it can happen too. Even for experienced drivers. Best is making habit to not release clutch until you are sure. Luckily for this car, the hud shows what gear it is.

Not sure how lucky this car was, we have no report back on its condition?

I learned to drive on the other side of the planet, the RHD side, and in an MT car (MT is ubiquitous there). But I don't think either driver position has an advantage when it comes to this.

I had never heard the term 'money shift' until on these forums, nor have I ever done it, but I can see how it could be possible. I redline in 3rd from time to time. I better watch out that I don't drop it into 2nd...

I did however, willingly downshift from 4th to 2nd recently after misjudging my speed while slowing down for a light. It could have been catastrophic but luckily engine speed was low and shot me to 6.5K RPM. That jolted me quite well. Never again.
