You can always tell the noobs at the track by how much blue tape they put on their car. You're far more likely to pick up stone chips on the street or on the highway than you are at the track. Mostly you'll just pick up tire slag or "marbles" and those will wipe off with the right solution. People do go off and throw rocks and dirt on the track but that's usually swept up between sessions. I've never bothered and everyone I know that's done more than a couple of sessions doesn't bother either.

Definitely can start taking away money from other mods so I didn't go balls out but went full frontal plus some and don't forget the CF roof if you have it. I went with xpel and it was around $2k. I also put Jet Seal over the top and try to keep up the detail to add an extra layer of protection. I will likely pick up those splash guards from Tommy L Garage because I cry looking at my rear fenders. Of course I have PPF there and the rocks still hit right above it...

previous owner did front half of the car and whole carbon fiber top. I am planning to do some in the rear quarter panels just after the back doors. Somehow I'm getting rock chips there.

you don't get dinged (no pun intended) for hood / stone chips so if I had a lease which I did on a 340i I didn't spend the money for ppf and would just return it. I did however get a good ceramic coating. With my M3 though as I bought it I got the full ppf done as it's worth it for me and means a lot to a buyer down the road and helps a ton in keeping the front end in good shape especially in my city as we have a lot of sand and little stones and crap on the crappy roads. I not sure how my numbers compare as I got what I think a very good price for suntek full front and ceramic all over and wheels and interior for $3k all in.

I'm a cheapo and did my own PPF around the rear fender which is an area I know will get chips regardless of how I drive. I have Tommy's mud flaps as well. I have a couple nicks on the front bumper due to cars in front of me but at the end of the day nothing will stay perfect forever.
Even though my car is leased, I did the PPF and MF mentioned above because I wanted to reduce damage from daily use in case I decided to buy out my car. I've said the same for the last two cars I leased but when the lease maturity came up, I ended up trading up in both cases. A lot of people do things because they claim they will keep their cars forever, but most don't follow through with it. Life changes (kids, need for bigger/smaller car, accidents, or technology) such that you end up wanting / getting something newer within 5-6 years.

Yep. $2k worth of Expel. Worth it.
Entire front half of the car, lower doors, sideskirt, extra rear fender, some on the rear bumper. Trying to touchup SSII is really, really hard. Already saved me 3 times. |

I also have my full front (bumper, hood, fenders) and rear arches covered with STEK ppf. Its been over 2 years now, shitty roads, track and its still looking brand new and still has hydrophobic properties like a ceramic coat

First car wrapped. Entire vehicle in Xpel Stealth. Including headlights and shawdowline trim in Xpel Ultimate (clear).
I can’t tell you how many times my dash cam picks up people walking up to my car to touch it. I think they believe the paint is some matte paint. LOL Oh, and I own the vehicle. I have never leased and I don’t think I would if I did lease it. |

I'm in the same boat as the OP. Purchased the car from a forum member here who took immaculate care of it (full front, doors, fenders, trunk and mirrors in SunTek) and I'm considering having a refresh done and having the rest of the vehicle wrapped.
It's an expensive investment (quoted 5.5k for a full SunTek Ultimate wrap) but since I'm planning on owning this car for years to come I'm leaning heavily towards it as opposed to just a ceramic coating. On a lease it probably wouldn't be the best idea unless you're considering buying it out at the end, but if you're planning on owning it for a decent amount of time I feel the added piece of mind is worth it.

If you ask me, a professional ceramic coating on top of a PPF is wasted cash. The PPF is self healing and if you want hydrophobic type properties you can spray some CQuartz reload on the car every few weeks and it serves the same purpose. Granted, it has to be applied several times per year. PPF is a must, Ceramic is just dependent on how lazy you are at detailing and washing a car.

I also detail my own vehicle, and wash it once a week. but I do understand those who don’t have time, or care to engage in the process of washing a car. |

PPF looks just like paint after wash/wax. Ceramic coating after a wash is very glossy. Don't wax over ceramic. In my first go at ever using ceramic coating my M4, I found it to not really be as great as people said it was. I used Cquartz ceramic. I found that the spray on stuff Cquartz sells called (reload) is the best. it sprays on in dry or wet and shines like crazy. Very easy to apply, can do the whole car in 10 minutes. Then the next two times you wash it, a simple battery powered leaf blower makes the water fly right off it. Car dries in 5 minutes flat. |

I PPF’d my car right after I bought it, including the bumper, half hood, full fenders, rockers, lower half of the doors, added rear arches, rear bumper splash area, and below the trunk. I have done several track days and have zero rock chips. My 2015 got peppered by chips in less than a year in NC, so I learned my lesson.

I had mine corrected/polished, then filmed and then ceramic coated. I wouldn't do it if the car was leased. It's definitely expensive, but worth it if you plan on keeping your car for a while.

A must do on a new car purchase IMO. Highly recommend doing it later as well if car is low mileage and paint is good.
Front half and rocker panels should be about $1000 Full front about $2000 with rockers Gotta do rear quarters on the above as well and maybe a 10" strip on roof just behind windshield. Full car about $5000 Have the rocker and quarter panels wrapped under to protect the painted body that faces the road and that you can't see. You will get peace of mind in ownership and some of that money spent will come back in higher price when selling. |
