2016 M4 DCT - Gearbox issue?
Hi All,
This morning on the way to work while sitting at a red traffic light i had a massive bump or knock. I actually thought someone had driven into the back of me. I put the car into neutral/park and checked the rear bumper. No one had driven into me. Got back in, selected drive and pulled away like normal with no noises or power loss. Any idea what it could be and what I need to do about it. It is totally standard so no mods to tuning or gearbox. Thank you |

I think sometimes the DCT just spazzes out for no reason. My 2017 F80 ZCP does a violent, clunk-inducing downshift from 3 to 2 sometimes, but only when the air conditioner is on and I'm in D1. I was freaking out at first, but it behaves fine otherwise.

Had this happen to me, almost to an exactness, but with my E46. What was explained to me was that in the event of a quicker than normal stop, the worn u joints or center support bearing allow for driveline bind and eventually that bind gets unbound…
Did you happen to make a quick stop? If not, ignore |

Was the oil still cold? The DCT can make some clunks when cold, specialty when the weather is cold.
It may have been doing the 2->1 shift. In stop-start traffic it'll hold 2nd, but if you stay stopped for a couple seconds it'll drop to 1. I see you're in Johannesburg. Brave of you to get out in traffic (South African here) |
