I've been looking for a car to build crazy hp. It's gonna be strictly a weekend car I want to use for drags or roll races. I just wanted to see if anyone has an experience here building a project car like this or if there is a car with great potential that I'm missing out on. I'm coming from a fbo e85 M4 but I don't need a daily anymore and want something more exhilarating.
So far on my list are:
09-10 gtr
996 turbo
Gen 3 viper

How about c7z? Seems like upper pulley, and down pipe + exhaust, tune is good for 650whp on pump gas. Weighs a bit less than m4 and fits 345 wide rear tires

Good choice on 996 turbo. mine is a stage 2+ car and have definitely been tempted by the idea of even more power.

depends on how deep your pockets are and how much HP you want. 800whp? 1000- 1500-2000whp?

I had a 10 GTR. You can go FBO E85 for like around $5k. 600whp low 10 sec 1/4 mile. But after that you need to upgrade the pistons and trans. And it starts getting expensive. Complete Alpha 10 kit with a built engine and trans is $65k. But you'll be running low 9s with a full weight reliable street car.

Gen V Vipers are about the same. exhaust, engine, turbo kit.. you're at about $60k for 1000whp. Since they are all manual most use them for roll racing.

The c7 z's are a bit expensive right now, maybe drop in price when the c8 comes out. I've been lookin at c6 Z06 as well. The 996 are truly special cars but it's hard to find a lower mileage one near me

I'm just looking towards the fbo e85 route for now maybe upgrade turbos but I know later down the road the GT-R can be pushed to well over 800hp. One thing holding me back from the gtr is that it seems similar to the m4 even though I never drove a gtr but after 3.5 years of owning M4 I got bored of it, I was pushing about 580whp on e85 but it just didn't excite me anymore.

gtr probably wont excite you then. its a bit more raw and less refined than the M4 but they are pretty similar performance wise at fbo levels on a highway roll... except the gtr has better brakes and grip. so if you like to drive in the twisty bits... the gtr does alot better there and can actually put all 600whp down in 1st and 2nd gear no problem. you can run a fat 12 inch rear wheel too. i had 285s up front at 335s out back.

The gtr is a better chassis to build then the M4 no doubt

It’s a ~17 year old car. Even if it’s only driven 3-5k miles per year it’s 50-80k miles these days.

I suggest focusing on overall condition and maintenance levels than mileage. A car that’s sat for years with low miles is going to give you more headaches than a car that’s driven regularly

Gen 3 viper, go TT and air shifter. Beast!
GTR sounds great love those things, but kinda same as F80 M3 bolt on to bolt and E85. About 600 whp 1/4 GTR faster from a roll I think F80 will take it.

Lol. Good one.

Is that enough $ to be in the 10s in the 1/4 mile? I’ve seen posts about 170+mph traps for drag racing DSMs but no idea how much $$$ it took to get there and how reliable it is

this is why i dont care about going to street race meet ups anymore lol. unless you are bringing an 800whp+ build you are gonna get beat by a junkyard dsm, foxbody, or LS based car that is gutted and trailered in on slicks with the guy claiming 'yeah its a street car'.

Lol yes that's plenty for a 10sec DSM
Btw if you think getting gapped by a talon with pop up lights is bad
The entire awd drivetrain fits into an Eagle Summit VAN
Get gapped by one of those and you'll seriously contemplate your life choices

C6Z with a built 427 and boost sounds like the winning ticket.

I don't know about "best" car, but the 'Stang, Camaro and Vette V8 cars have always been the cheapest mod for straight line speed choice it seems.
