Cracked windshield NJ
I was driving on the GSP and a huge rock hit my windshield out of no where. Need to have the windshield repaired/replaced. With GEICO MBI my deductible is only $50 so I'm most likely filing through insurance. Any good shops around central NJ or should I just take it to the dealer since my deductible is so low? Another option is safelite but I would have to request for OEM glass and wait for them to source it.

Believe it or not, i fixed a crack of a similar size on my windshield using the blue-star kit and following ChrisFix's video on youtube. Figured i didnt want to involve insurance when not needed, and $13 before shelling out $ on a new windshield was a no brainer in giving it a try.
Can try to grab some pictures, but it'll be hard to capture. Literally i can only see 1-2mm of the leftover crack and thats having to look for it. https://amzn.to/3iKAuwo |

I'm in the process of doing this, the Glass is about ~$500 for OEM and ~$250 For the rain sensors. I was quoted around $850 for the whole job from dealers windshield source.

if you have heads up display (which looks like you do) and youre planning on replacing the windshield take it to the dealer or find the best option to get a OEM one. Don't cheap out. no other windshield works well with HUD except the OEM one.
However there is ways to repair that. A few YouTube videos and kits on amazon to repair it. Just do it before it turns into a big crack.

May be 1-1.5 hrs from you but highly recommend it if you want a perfect job. Dealers don’t do glass themselves and typically outsource to glass shops. In my case, GEICO rejected quote from my dealer since the dealer was asking twice as much.

There is a better pic of the crack. I would not have attempted to repair that. I left it at the dealer this morning. With a $50 deductible it was a no brainer. Was told I'm looking at about $1950 and that's with the "discounted" price for insurance companies
Biggest factor that led me to the dealer were that I needed a loaner. Would have maybe considered having safelight come and fix it outside my house with OEM glass but I haven't been home during the day the past few days. Crossing my fingers that the insurance company accepts the claim. Should have the car back within the next day or two. |

Here is the itemized invoice from the dealer I went to. It was very much overpriced and they sure as heck made sure to charge for EVERYTHING. Keep in mind this was the "discounted" price for insurance LOL
Dropped off the car on a Monday morning and had it back that Friday mid-day. Quality is the expected 10/10. They even reinstalled my blendmount which I had forgotten to remove. Also appreciate the fact they had me in and out of there with a loaner when I when to drop the car off in about 15-20 min. GEICO told me to email the invoice and they would reimburse me for the payment minus the $50 deductible. To my surprise about three days letter, I get an email telling me I have a pending payment ready for acceptance from the claim for $1225. I called up and they said the invoice was marked up way too much. After escalating the issue and speaking to a supervisor, I was able to get reimbursed an additional $425. Decided that was acceptable. So in reality I ended up paying about $300 out of pocket. I'll take it. But definitely won't be going back to the dealer next time, I'll most likely source OEM glass from Safelite. |

Ryan is a body shop. so you took your car to a dealer and they farmed it out to Ryan? was it Circle or Freehold, if you don't mind me asking?

Most dealers dont do body work, its usually only mechanical. Theres some select few that have all the good stuff but even then, who can afford the $192+/hr and inflated labor hours required. I just had a radiator and parts replaced at a german indy shop for almost 1/5 dealer cost, and it comes with a 90 day warranty (yeah its whatever but at least they have something).

That's a bit odd. The dealer should have claimed and worked with insurance to repair the damage. And, you would have just paid deductible to dealer and walked out. I am surprised that the dealer didn't directly work with insurance to sort out admin issues.

I think that's only for collision repair/claims not comprehensive (or glass repair at least). I could be wrong

Once I took a loaner (long long time ago!) and the windshield cracked while I was driving. My dealership opened up the claim with the insurance and worked with them. They didn't even charge me my deductible. The insurance company contacted me to verify the claim and that was it.
