Juuust curious...
Well if you're too late performing this service, the warranty on the components that would have been serviced is voided. And since the break-in period is where any car sheds the most metal into its fluids, it's a good idea to get that out of there. Several performance cars either specify an initial service like this at 500-1500 miles or at least have enthusiast communities strongly recommending it.

Hopefully the prospect of increased risk and diminished resale value from a partially voided warranty and the unnecessary wear and tear is enough to incentivize you to get this FREE (in the US) service performed.

good question, does anyone know if the dealer cover this 1200 service?

For the US, yes -- as they have for many years now. Ultimate Service covers any fluid changes and a few other things that are specified by the car and/or BMW.

In the US it's covered under the free maintenance plan. (again only engine and diff fluids) IF you are on ED and you need to have the first service done... any Germany or EU dealer can do the service, but you have to pay local economy prices. That's around ~500 euros. You can get the money back thru BMA NA when you return to the USA. At least that's the way it worked with the e9x M cars.

500 Euro for oil and diff service?

If that's what the E9x M3 service cost, I'm betting that not having the trans service plus not having to buy 9 liters of $15/liter 10W60 oil will drop that pretty dramatically. My friends who aren't BMW people are shocked that an oil service on my car costs ~$180.

On the e9x the first service was more like 700 euros.

You guys forget that most dealers over here charge 140 euros per hour, and ONE liter of oil is about 32 euros. Its not hard to drop some serious change. Plus gas costs about $9/gallon. And ohh an M3/M4 will set you back atleast 100K euros over here. Quality costs.

Thanks for sharing. This is very helpful.
I have my first service scheduled tomorrow morning and just called the dealer. They don't even have the plug screw...

Thanks for this. It is good to be an American living in the USA where the first 4 years of BMW maintenance is free.

Bahahahahahaha..........

"The only thing new is that now BMW says you MUST replace the oil pan plug/screw and differential screw/plug with new ones! The crush o-ring is now built into the screw."

Just when you thought you were out!!!(not having to pay $15/L 10w-60for oil)
BMW pulls you back in with, (replace the plugs with new ones.)

I'm guessing copper is going up in Germany or BWM is following Audi with drain plugs that come with steel/metal washer$

My Audi A3 (the 2.0T engine is also shared with a bunch of other Audi and VW cars) also requires a full drain plug change for every oil change.

Well...thats not "quality costs" but pure geo-political profit-maximising rip-off.
Greetings from near the Ring, where I am also prepared to pay the rip-off

The only reason, why it makes sense to pay the German mark-up, is, that we can use the potential of the car more often around here

On the other had, BMW Service would never allow you to use another oil, even if it's Castrol, during warranty period. BS.

No, it's called tax - over here. The Germans tax the fuel and oil like crazy to pay for the road system. That isn't quite enough, so it looks like in 2016 they will start to tax all cars on the German Autobahn, Bundestrasse and local roads.

Germany Proposes a Road Tax Aimed Primarily at Foreigners
http://www.nytimes.com/2014/07/08/bu...oreigners.html

I checked with a friend who works for BMW AG... seems there is another very important reason to have the first service done at a dealer! Not until the first oil service is done, will the new F8x M cars be able to activate Launch Control. The dealer also has to use the BMW scan tool and not reset the system via the instrument panel(kombi). Here is the BMW AG warning...

Also the first oil service should run about ~350 euros at most BMW Zentrum's in Germany. The service is a lot cheaper than the e9x M3's because the trans fluid doesn't get changed and the oil for the S55(same oil as for the N54/N55's) is a lot cheaper than the TWS 10w60 Castrol M oil for the old M3's.

^^This video has been around for awhile and its a fake. I would worry too much about this. But for my money... I think using Castrol oil is better than using BMW branded oil. Even though they should be the same oil, I do not think they are in fact. They come from two different countries(as stamped on the bottles).

BMW says either one. But 0w40 works better at extreme cold and hot climates/temps, so that might be the one to use.

Saw this helpful thread...

Went in for my 1200 mile service today. I called in the day before to make sure they had the diff oil. The engine oil is just standard BMW LL4 oil, but the diff oil is special.

Fortunately they had it in stock, so I brought the car in this morning.

UNFORTUNATELY, they do NOT have the plastic oil drain plug in stock. So, this means that the car is stuck.

Screw for engine oil pan/plug: 11 11 7 849 396
Screw for differential: 33 11 7 525 064

Thank you, will stick to that one then. Between San Diego and Phoenix, definitely will be seeing hot temps.

I'm curious, Is it possible to ask the service department at BMW to use 0w40 oil at the time of an oil change?

It depends on your dealer. Some even do not use BMW oils! So its best to ask and "inform" them of what oil you want in your car.

Just get the first service done today. My tech said the oil parts number is actually 07-51-0-017-954, which shows on the dealerspeed website. He did replace all 3 screws, 2 for differential and 1 for the oil plug. The parts number for those screws are the same as the OP provided.
