That is the great dilemma, and there really is nothing better than stepping into two fresh cars 3-4 years apart, likely offering two different generations, without having (almost) any maintenance and warranty headaches over the same ~ 7 year period. The only exception I would consider to the two fresh rides would be the option and resources to complete a dream build M.

One could argue that the residual resale on the dream build would put some money in your pocket at the end of the ~ 7 years, but surely all the modifications - fabrications - maintenance - repairs/warranty extension costs, etc., sunk into the vehicle will ultimately make it a wash.

I would only consider the dream build option over two fresh rides under two strict conditions. #1: I could have the build completed in the first 1-2 years of ownership of a completely new generation, thereby really getting 5-6 (hopefully great years of enjoyment owning a truly one of a kind head-turning and jaw-dropping M.

Bottom line is, if you absolutely love the car and have taken very good to exceptionally good care of it, then buy out the residual, and enjoy YOUR car. The #2: disclaimer being it's economically feasible to upgrade to the 100K extended factory warranty, before the 50K factory warranty expires.

Keep the mods warranty compliant up to Dinan stage 2-3 and bag it on some forged monoblock HREs over carbon ceramic brakes, carbon fiber aesthetic everything, GTS rear LEDs, Liberty Walk wide body kit, and a valvetronic Armytrix or Meistershaft exhaust setup. ~ 550 whp. Absolute M3YHEM.

Then give yourself a good five years to fully enjoy a build like that before considering your next project...

As far as the buy vs lease argument is concerned...it's personal preference, but 90% of the time buying is cheaper. The cheapest option in my opinion and what I did is to buy a slightly used M car for cash after someone else has taken on the majority of the depreciation. No payments and no interest!
So you bought the car from the owner and not through the dealer ?
