Auto Express - Lexus RC F vs BMW M4 super-coupe track battle

Much bigger gap than some other comparisons!

There was much controversy over how, in a different track comparison done by Randy Probst, the Lexus only lost by a few tenths of a second.

But not this time hahaha

I like the Lexus a great deal. Have sat in one and even drove it a bit.

Totally shocked at this result, as well as the reviews coming out of the likes of Top Gear, Harris & others. They are ripping this car apart. If only Lexus had spent some R&D on the weight, this couldn't been a contender. But they didn't so it's already behind the pack. They should have come stronger with this car, it means so much to them.

the RC-F is becoming the Rodney King of the automotive journalist community.

it's almost as if Lexus built a car to compete with the outgoing M3. going to be tough to sell these when you can pick up a used e90 for so much less. this is just a subjective opinion, but I will say that I'd take a used e90 over this any day of the week.

Same. I don't see any reason to buy the Lexus over the E9x M3, apart for the interior and a warranty. IMO of course.

That is more in line with track results we should expect between the cars

I think the folks who buy the RC-F are a different crowd and buy it partially because they like the Lexus brand and also because they perceive better reliability. I don't think they would ever pick up a used clunker... I mean E90 . The perception on Club Lexus (not saying it is correct) is that BMW is a one owner car and then reliability becomes an issue.

Reliability is an issue even for the first owner on BMWs

But I keep coming back

I'm a Club Lexus member as well. You are correct, the general mood towards the M4 vs. RC-F is that they all know the M4 is a better car performance wise, but they feel the Lexus will be more reliable while still being quick and "fun".

I happen to really like the RC-F. The M4 is just a better car. PERIOD. Hopefully there won't be any reliability issues on the F8X. That's not to say Lexus is perfect either.

Chris Harris gave the RCF a markedly worse review than the B8 RS4, and that's saying something as the Audi took a step backwards from the B7 version which was good fun.

Seems like a 2-horse race for right now as the benchmark* M3's only challenger is the C63S which apparently does some things better than the M3 and others not as well meaning at least there are two great choices for trackable sedan buyers. That said, I hope the RCF finds sales success as it's great to have Lexus continuing to join the three germans in the 4-seat performance arena.

*Regardless of whether one thinks the M3 is the best car, the fact is the M3 defines the segment and is thus the benchmark, just as the GT3 is the benchmark 2-seater sports car and the S-Class the benchmark luxury sedan.

It's funny because..on the Lexus website for the RC-F the M4 gets beat down lol. The deals on the RC-Fs are retarded as well. $1500 payments with like $10k down..wtf.

Interior? Have you sat in RC-F? Interior looks and feels like MY 1998 japanese family sedan. At any scale it's out of comparison to any BMW, Audi or MB.

Randy is a dinosaur and his skills are perishable. Eye sight, reaction time, I don't understand why people take those reviews seriously. If some 25 year old F1 driver did the laps you would see a big difference. I guess it makes for a sweet retirement gig haha. But just like when they reviewed the GTR and the new zo6 thinking that it was mind boggling how it couldn't keep up with the GTR nismo lol. There's a lot of irrational thinking in motortrend and a massive bias towards American cars.

also not a fan of the interior. I've gotten the new is250 as a loaner car and the interior was terrible. very similar to the rc. On the other hand my wife's gs350 interior kills my f80 interior IMO. GS interior is on another level compared to the fc
