Need help with brake creaking noise
Need some help…
I have a 2017 BMW M4 F83. On hard braking, seems when the brakes heat up after a few minutes the rear drivers side is making a heavy horrendous creaking sound… I took it to BMW and as suspected they said it needs new disks and pads. I’ve put genuine disks and pads on and instantly im getting the same noises again. I’ve uploaded a couple of short videos of the noise on this link. https://files.fm/u/k7x5nvgdq Any ideas!? Im going crazy with it…. Thanks! |

That sound is something flexing that’s not supposed to. For single piston brakes usually it means you have a stuck caliper slide. For our multi piston brakes it could potentially be one of your pistons or brake pads sticking. With the wheels off have someone press the brakes while you closely look at the operation of the brakes.
if you confirm uneven piston operation bleed the brakes. Check the condition of the piston seals. Make sure the brake pad hardware are installed correctly and have proper lubrication. |

Are you comfortable with tapping out the pin and removing brake pads, or do you need a mechanic to help? Gauging DIY ability.

(Jump to end, maybe figured it out…)
I was going to suggest YOU take a look. It's very easy to remove the pin and slide the pads out. Brake pads should show brake grease (SilGlyde, or the purple stuff) on the edges where they slide, and in a circle on the back where the pistons touch. If you pulled out the pads you should be able to get your fingers into the calipers. Push a little on one piston at a time, the other(s) should move out. Check they all slide okay, then even them back up. Check the sides where the brake pads slide, since dust and grease make hard crud. Also lightly grease your pins, but not where the little expansion joint is that holds it in. Just grease where things slide. (Here's where I really would look hard, just thought of it!) When reinstalling make sure to grease the center spring clip, the one that is held in by the pin, where it touches the pads. That thin metal clip could be creaking as you squash on the pads.

Sounds like the brake pad anti rattle clips are vibrating and rattling. Probably installed it wrong.
Looks like this. https://www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-...yABEgJaMvD_BwE Last edited by krudmunk; 10-04-2022 at 03:33 PM.. |
