Valvoline advanced synthetic 0W-40 7 quarts

135258 miles
How convenient for them to say after 130k miles lmao definitely inspect on your own and have a good shop check it out as well

Do some work yourself. First check the filter to see if the birdcage is still secured and working right. Check filter pleats for debris. Check this all with a cold unstarted engine.

Then get underneath and check for the drain plug to have the crush washer. Me…I'd drain the oil and measure the volume, and use a magnet to check for any ferrous particles. Then I'd fill it myself with 0w30, and log/dashboard oil pressure in Bootmod3.

Sorry to say but there are lots of possibilities on what could be wrong.

Once I can get my car towed back to my house. I will definitely check the filter myself and the other items you recommended. Fingers crossed. $10,000 for a new engine is not what I want to be facing right now.

The shop hasn't had a chance to diagnose yet but speculates either carbon build up or bad oil pressure sensor. Car is sitting at 135,000 on the odometer. Any feedback or recommendations are much appreciated.
Probably birdcage on filter house or o ring on tip is missing and oil is draining back to oil pan from missing o ring causing low oil pressure and vanos errors

Do you by chance have a part number or link for those handy in case it turns out that is what the problem is and I can order them?

If you need a new birdcage or it’s damaged, you need the entire oil filter cap: 11427525334.

Both o-rings come with the oil filter. I like to use Mann HU8011Z. Pretty much identical to the BMW branded ones.

What an absolute nightmare. Whatever shop that was, I'd not go back. Especially about the BS of engines needing replacement after 135k. WTF?!!😳😡

Well to be fair, there are a lot of negative stereotypes of BMW’s in the service sector from a lot of misinformation.

I used to work for a OEM oil filter mfg and although filter manufacturing is highly automated and freak occurrences hardly ever happen, it is something worth checking. Get the filter mentioned above, use an oring pick tool, fresh oil to lube up the orings and check the mating area where the filter sits into in the housing for any foreign debris or blockage.

If you find an issue with the filter, notify Valvoline and they might reach out to make it right.

Took my oil cap off and that internal cage and gasket was completely missing. I went down to the shop and showed them a photo of mine vs a replacement...they claimed they "ripped everything out of the dumpster and couldn't find that part" and went on to say "it wouldn't have damaged your engine" by not having it. Furthermore "someone would have figured it out and replaced it before your engine even suffered damage. " the manager went on to say the new hire changed my oil and might have made a mistake. Lastly the manager claims that part was never in my oil cap to begin with.... smh...

I'll be ordering myself tonight

I would demand a refund for the oil change and reimbursement for the tow and the replacement part. That's ridiculous and obvious they messed it up with their oil change.

Glad you took this matter into your own hands. Really hoping the correct filter installation closes this out on a positive note for you. And I agree the shop should cover the cost of oil change and tow.

They checked the dumpster the same way they checked the oil filter when you asked. Bunch of incompetent liars! No way that was missing before you took it in. A missing birdcage results in the oil filter being bypassed and also can affect flow. You would have noticed issues after your previous oil change. Hopefully no damage was done to any of your oil critical parts, such as rod bearings. In addition to swapping out the cap and filter drain whatever thicker oil they put in and replace with correct oil. Listen closely to the engine for any weird noises and make sure the Vanos codes go away. Take it to a BMW specialist and let them know what happened and get it fully evaluated. If any major repairs are required expect the shop to deny all responsibility but ask nicely any way. Explain logically with what I said above and remind them that they changed it the time before.

If they don’t want to help, Karen-up and take it to corporate management (assuming it’s a nationwide shop). If that doesn’t work let them know you you will be back with your lawyer. Good luck.

Probably best to get it out of that shop.
I asked about the oil filter and they stated they checked it. I'm not sure how much I believe it at this point. I'm going to have it moved to my house and check the filter myself. If it checks out and doesn't turn out to be the culprit then I'll have it taken to a different shop. At this point They've changed the oil twice now, no visible leaks under the hood or under the car. They said it would be $1,500 for them to drop the oil pan go investigate from that perspective; but then they also said it may be time for a new engine because "BMWs are known for total engine failure and replacement over 130,000 miles"
What load of BS. Might as well throw away my 3 BMW's because they are nearing 130K!
I would…
Get the car home. Do your own oil change (6.5 quarts) and use a BMW filter with the two O rings that come with the filter.

The S55 is not a cheap engine to replace.
I would go to a legit shop and pay the price for an oil change or do it my self.

Have them pull the oil filter and make sure the bottom of the previous filter hasn't broken off starving your engine. Had to replace me oil filter housing due the this issue.

Got it home, and as you can see from the picture, no birdcage attached to the cap. I was able to find one locally this evening. I went to the shop that changed my oil and the manager dodged. I called them out on this because I specifically asked if the entire assembly with the cage amd valve tip with the gasket were checked prior to them replacing the oil pressure sensor. They said yes and I called BS and told him that was a flat out lie. He tried to come back amd say "well you were over due for an oil change anyway. He turned around and said "well I wasn't the one who changed the oil. It was the new guy ".

I can't stand people who dodge responsibility. The funny thing is when I was in there Friday this 28 year old manager was acting like a hot shot as though he made it to the CEO position; talking a big game to employees. True colors come out when you go throw your people under the bus and abrogate all responsibility.

Anyhow, I got everything checked, cap replaced and everything put back properly. Went for drive for an hour. No more low pressure warnings, no vanos codes. I'll be keeping an eye on it.

Tomorrow I'll be calling corporate because the manager would only refund me the oil pressure sensor cost and not the $140 for the oil change. Definitely never taking my car there again and will make a point of doing it myself or taking it to a euro shop.

The birdcage is still in the old filter…
The idiot is in the back of the shop hiding.
The double idiot is in the front of the shop and let the new guy work on a $70K car.

I'm glad to have closed this out on a positive note. Could have been much worse. Today I'll be contacting corporate and filing a complaint against that shop and their manager.
