Personally, I never doubted there would be anything but an I6.

This is great news.

With all due respect to the S65, BMW's signature has been the inline six and their accessible halo car should have one.

This is going to make me think about whether I want to keep the 1M when this beast arrives.

4 doors. More power. More fuel-efficiency.

Luckily, I don't have to make any decisions for a few more years

But if it would only have like 440hp, this is achievable right now with $3000 upgraded turbos on the N54 engine, or even pushing the stock turbos.

So they will probably need the 3rd "electrical" turbocharger or maybe even some electrical hybrid tech to really bring something new and enticing to the market.
LSD.

M suspension.

M-tuned/M-designed engine (the N54 in the 1M and Z35is is a preview of M-Tuning. This will be a 'S' designation engine designed and built by M.

Lighter.

M Dynamic Mode(s).

7-speed manual (Yeah, I just made that up, but why should Porsche have all the fun?)

This is all great, but the Fxx is bigger than the e92. I don't want a bigger M. I want a smaller m.

Whatever his exact word answer was about the M4, it left no doubt in my mind that the sedan will be an M3 a and the coupe/convertible will be an M4.

When asked the direct question "Will the new M3 have three turbos?" he said emphatically "No.".

His answers were usually short and direct, sometimes just one word. It kind of reminded me of the old Magic 8 Ball. Shake it, turn it over, get a terse answer. For those too young to remember, there is an online version.
Lol I was the one who asked the question about the M4. What a great time I had there.

All I can say is BMW had better not f**k this up. The enthusiasts they would lose will never return. I'm glad I bought an E9x M3 when I did.
My opinion is this gonna be some bored and/or stroked out N54. Not called an N54 of course and of course turbocharged. I'm almost positive it will be 3.5 litres because it's a legendary number and has cache' with us from the M1 and first M5.

Why can't people just enjoy the ride and not bitch about things. Half of the bitching people probably never drove M or bought one. When was last time car company went backward to have less HP?

If you've looked at the technology in the modern Ms, you'll see a trend with technology being introduced in one & then perfected in the next:
  • The E39 M5 introduced Double VANOS
  • The E46 M3 had a refined VANOS & the SMG II gearbox
  • The E60 M5 had SMG III & high-revving V10
  • The E92 high-revving V8 & introduced M-DCT
  • The F10 perfected M-DCT & introduced 1st F/I M car (I wouldn't consider the 1M the 1st F/I car b/c it used a recycled engine from a non-M 3 series)

Same engine as 335is = N54

If you thought I meant take the exact same gearbox in the new 3 series and put it in the next gen M you're an idiot. What I'm suggesting is that its probably that we will see a completely new DCT gearbox in the next M3/M4.

^^I wouldn't go that far, especially when Ferrari, Porsche, McLaren & the GTR are all using DCTs in their cars right now. The shift times between a DCT & auto is def much smaller then it was 4 years ago.

Anyone else?

If that turns out to be truth for the next M3/M4 than it is very good news for us 1M owners too since we will have many new parts and options from factory for upgrading our N54T (which already showed capacity of up to 500 hp and more than 600 nm under the hands of tuning companies). Not that I am looking for more power but if they go with a version of N54 it will have a lot of new goodies installed for sure. I bet they would call it something else though! And I am sure the M3 will have more than quoted 450 hp.

Seriously...if it's going to be Turboed with being "faster" in mind, yet it will still be slower than the GTR, i might as well get the GTR which will have less problem + more reliable + more tuning capable + most importantly faster asa "TURBO CAR"

I'm just sayin...after seeing the already success of FR-S and BRZ, I kinda miss the powertrain and drive of older days of M3....what a true sports car used to be
The true driving feel of a sports car as you put it is not about turbo pace, otherwise we would not have a 1M, at least this good; and if you drive one you will appreciate that it really captures the spirit of those older sports cars, maybe even better than most modern NA cars. So it is possible despite! turbos, they just need to do it right. Right means turbo grunt and NA feel which 1M already is famous for without being perfect. For the M3 I am confident BMW will polish this feel and give us a product both very natural in feel but with turbo kick. I can't see anyone not falling in love with this combo. Basically they will bring together the best attributes of 1M and E9X M3 which is very very good in my book.

Each to his own. I'm looking to jump out of the E60 M5, and this could be just the ticket. I need the rear seat room.
