Full Electric BMW M Cars Possible After 2025 Says Chief of Engineering

Full Electric BMW M Cars Possible After 2025 Says Chief of Engineering
97
COMMENTS

At the currently ongoing BMW #NextGen Conference being held in Munich, BMW Chief of Engineering, Klaus Frohlich, provides some insight into the future of electrification of the M models.

"For me, power PHEV is the next step," Frohlich says. "Of course, that car will be between 1,600 to 1,700 kilograms (3,500 to 3,700 pounds), all-wheel drive, and 600 horsepower at least." These numbers may not sound hugely impressive at first, but still represent a healthy improvement over the current M5. It's equally powerful, but significantly heavier at 4,370 lbs (1,982 kg).

"Beyond 2025, there will be also possibly M BEVs (battery electric-vehicles)," Frohlich says. "Because M is not a letter for technology, M is simply a letter for performance – and performance not only to 60. That's easy."

A 3500 lb, 600 hp electrified M with a 1000 km range and a 5 minute charge time would be killer!

Sure, why not. It’s the future, as someone already said. I won’t be a customer though.

One suggestion - just cancel the whole M division and just sell them all under the i line. Let M die with dignity

That's exactly why I bought my M2, because the car industry is changing like we never imagined.

BMW was once WAY ahead with the i3/i8, now it's too little too late.

Actually, the exhaust sounds of all old M cars will be on a sound file and you will be able to select your favorite ICE M car exhaust sound via the i-Drive menu called "M Sound."

My suggestion would be to select the mechanical yet melodious harmonies of the S85 V10 or the P65 V8 to be piped into the driver interface via BMW M-design Speakers.

Change the sound of the car with a touch of a screen.

This is all sarcasm of course but you know it will likely happen.

Sounds like a super-dumb move. Think about all the people that would immediately be out of consideration because they can't charge a car at home.

Will this coincide with BMW exiting all racing series that use ICE?

...and people are over here crying about manual transmissions!

That weight target seems quite.... optimistic? A model 3 performance is over 4,000 lbs and a model s is almost 5,000lbs.

Lame ass electric sports car!!! Real sports cars smell like burning oil, gasoline vapors and burning rubber. I would take a slower car over a faster if it sounded amazing!.

I love the current M cars but electrc technology is evolution. May as well get on board and keep your current combustion car to reminisce what it was like to drive.
