Initial thoughts on Goodyear Supercar 3

View post on imgur.com

Goodyear Supercar 3 was the factory tire for Gen 6 Camaro SS 1LE. In 2019, Goodyear decided to release more sizes for broader application. There aren't many reviews for these tires, especially when mounted on other cars beside gen6 1LE.

After some debate, and some sweet corporate discount from a friend - I installed them last Thursday - 265/35/19, and 285/35/19 on stock 437m rims. I drove 100+ miles over the weekend - still in breaking-in period though. Below are my initial thoughts

Grip - Definitely a step above PS4S, but Supercar 3s (SC3) are more temperature sensitive, they need a bit temperature before they start to grip. It has less outright grip than other 200TW EP (Extreme Performance) tires that I had before (AD08R, Z2, Z2*). However, I do expect the gap to be smaller as the tire put on a few more miles.

Turn in response - I always complained about lack of feedback on the PS4S. SC3 is much much better than PSS/PS4s, even with SC3's sidewall bulging more ( I mounted 265 front on factory 9' rim. and found out that SC3 are much wider than PS4s of same size - so the side wall bulges more). I expect the response to be even better if rims are a litter wider than 9'.

Road comfort - This really surprised me (in a good way), they are not bad at all driving around / on highway. Much less road noise than other 200TW EP tires, which all sound like busted wheel bearing while driving. It is even quieter than my worn PS4s (worn shoulders due to lack of camber on track, see pic below)

Overall, I think SC3 is a good compromise for those who are not chasing the last 0.1 second on track

Edit:
here are a few more pics - I'm on coilover (very mildly lowered) and camber plate (-2.5F, -2R)

Would you recommend it over PS4S for street use only?

depends on your location. Here in SF/Bay area, we don't have much rain through out the year. So daily this is totally doable.

However, I seriously doubt SC3 would perform nearly as good as PS4s does in the rain.

Thanks for the review! Im really on the fence about this tire vs PS4s. I live in Seattle but dont daily the car. Im mostly worried about how long these will last, will it last like twice less than PS4s or like 30% less? Also can you send some pics of how they look on your rims?

Glad to help

Hmmm it's hard to evaluate the longevity of these tires vs ps4s at this point - I'm sure you can find some more info on the camaro forum.

But I'm sure SC3 lasts much longer than some other 200tw tires such as the re71r which is known for its notoriously quick tread wear

Thanks! That setup is awesome, thats what im going for. I have to say PS4s sidewall looks better but i guess this one does not look too bad

I'd be surprised if they hold up after 10-15k as well as the PS4S. Michelin's maintain their ride quality and noise level amazingly well as long as you keep them aligned and inflated reasonably well. Goodyear's and Bridgestones, not so much IME.

i'd be happy if these last me 10k for mixed use. After all these are 220TW Extreme Performance tire, whereas PS4S's 300TW max performance summer.

Comparing it to other ~200TW EP tires, this one definitely has measurably longer tread life than others

How were your times affected by these tires compared to the RE71R? If it's only 0.1ths with a progressive grip falloff and longer life, +2 or 3 track days, then I want to give these a try.

I didn't get to drive these tires on the same track (moved to Norcal in 2019 and then mounted SC3s).

But based on reviews I saw on Gen 6 Camaro forum, RE71 yields 2-3 second faster laptime on a ~1:30 track.
