RE71R tires

Hey guys,

I have about 350 km on my RE71R tires and jesus christ they make this car extremely stiff and i feel every little vibration and feel in the steering wheel.

I love the whole race car feel but in terms of compliance and absorbing bumps is it just me or are these tyres extremely brutal?

Genuinely wondering if there is something up with my car now.

Hey man I was thinking about getting those tires, but decided to go with the Yokohoma Advan AD08R instead because they aren't as sticky and I was worried about the tread life.

So while I don't have RE71RS, I can say that the AD08Rs made the car drive night and day better than the OEM Continentals that came with it. It is wayyyy more comfortable and it just feels way more planted. I haven't noticed an increase in vibration through the steering wheel either. Since the 71Rs are even more extreme than the AD08Rs I would think that it would feel even better, but maybe not?

I came from a well set up 996 turbo with pss9 coil overs to my f80 zcp. The ride on my f80 was Firm but noticeably softer than the 996. My f80 has the 20” comp wheels with MPS tires. When I switch to my track setup with 18” rims and my re71 it feels noticeably stiffer than the stock tires But I wouldn’t call it brutal. The re71 feels like it has some stiffer sidewalls. Does your car have EDC? When I drive on the street I have the suspension on mine in either comfort or sport. When it’s in sport plus it’s pretty brutal like you describe. It’s fine on the track but on the street it’s ridiculous. Maybe your EDC is stuck on sport+?

Yup i have the EDC.

In comfort mode it is decent at best, in sport + my girlfriend had her back blown out harder than i usually blow it out so ya it is super firm.

I am coming from the stock conti's though and i would say comfort with the RE71Rs feels like sport+ with the conti's.

Also do they get a bit more compliant as you break them in?

OP, what size rims are you on?
On my 2015 M4 I burned thru 4 sets of RE71’s on my 19” 437M wheels, I didn’t think they wear that bad.

I got exact same set up as you, 437M on 19s.

How much did you get on them? Just DD or any events?

And how firm did you find the ride?

Sounds like you just run them on the street? I ran mine on the street for about 5k miles and the compliance during that time was unchanged. I now only run them on the track only, and I have 6 track days on them. I can’t speak for street only because they don’t get truly hot enough but with more wear and heat cycles they are getting louder and the rubber feels like it’s getting stiffer and less grippy. I am almost down to the cords. This is my first set of re71. I have more experience with the R888r and if it’s anything like those towards the end they tended to get hard at the end with lots of heat cycles.

Sorry I tend to rant and get off topic. No they didn’t get any more compliant. To me They stayed about the same then the ride got stiffer towards the end of their life where I’m at now.

DD, I could probably get 8-10k miles with no track days, this is an estimate.
Track days 2-3 if I didn’t get them flipped on the rims, 4-5 days if I did.
I always drove with the suspension dampening in sport plus.
I didn’t think they felt that stiff, I ran the air pressure at 30-31 psi. This is on the street and track.

If you are on Sport plus and have the original ZCP coding the car will be extremely firm and not soak up bumps in the road. If you update to cs or the new ZCP coding it will be less harsh

Stiff is a personal reference. I have a C7 Z07 Vette. In track mode on the freeway the Vette it is 10x harsher than sport+ in the M4.

Yup, streetable track day tires will have very stiff sidewalls, you'll feel every vibration, pull of the road, crack in the road, and more texture of the road. Everyone has a different threshold for how much they're willing to endure, but it sounds like you've just discovered your threshold for discomfort is fairly low on a daily driver.

I have a track setup with Nankang AR1s and they are unbearable on the street. At 80mph they're louder than the stereo lol.

Got used to them now ahah, they give you so much more steering feel and control. I can't see the car any other way now, the previous Conti's do not compare at all in my opinion.

Also the grip is nauseating, taking very hard corners and change of directions i find my head being a little stirred up due to the lack of slip or theatrics to soften the G forces. My passengers feel even worse.

Now i hope i can get 10k miles out of them hopefully but for anyone hesitant or on the edge of grabbing a set i say do it and don't look back it transforms the car completely.

They are noisy but i like it.

I have the RE71Rs on my daily driver and they are a pretty harsh and noisy tire, especially once you reach past the half way point of the tread. It sounds like ripping apart Velcro when driving on the freeway and it makes a howling noise that’s a bit annoying. I have Cup 2s on the F80 and I’m going to upgrade to the Cup 2 connects since they have better wear numbers closer to the PS4S which will make them more economical to run.

Cup2s are the best tire I’ve driven on... all the grip with none of the downsides.

Well... cost is probably one of the downsides.

Yup but at least the new cup2 is closer to PS4S in terms of tire wear.
