Idiosyncrasy with the Hill Assist feature
For cars equipped with a manual transmission, there is a hill assist feature. When you stop on a slope and push the clutch in, the brake will engage automatically and hold the car for a few seconds, keeping it from rolling back.
In my car, it does not work consistently. When I come to a stop the first time, it always works. But, if I go forward and then press the clutch in again, still in first gear, and the come to rest again, it does not reengage. Instead, I must put the transmission into neutral first, and then engage first gear again to make it work. Is this normal?

It's absolutely normal. Similar to the auto start/stop function. It will always engage the first time you stop. After you move again, the car assumes you want manual control of the vehicle.
Nothing to worry about there. |

+1. That's the design and it works well. If it kept braking at every roll it would get rather intrusive and annoying. To be totally honest my muscle memory is so trained wth over 25 years of driving manuals I don't even wait for it to kick in. I am already gone well before the brake assist happens
