New F80 Owner

Hello all,

I’m a recently new owner of a 2017 BMW M3 competition current mileage is at 87k. Car had 3 previous owners and I’m unsure of its history. The car did not come with 666 comp wheels. It has 437s. I’m fairly new to BMW in general as a platform so excuse any mistakes I make with my F80 lingo. I just drove the car kinda hard last night trying to get used to it and man is this thing a beast. Doesn’t compare to my Infiniti Q50 I had it tuned to 415hp and I thought it was quick until I sat in this. I like to do my own work on my cars so any first mods/ DIY anyone can recommend will be appreciated.

I will hold off on making the car faster for now but I still want to do the crank hub. Is there anyway to know if the crank hub has been done previously?
The car does have some wear and tear so I’ll be fixing some of those things like the start button is completely worn off. I’ll be replacing that. Will also be doing maintenance on the car so any tips on using the Idrive, recommended parts/tools to use for service please leave it below.

First big mods will most likely be exhaust and lowering springs and wheels.
Please leave your recommendations for this as well or link me to threads where these topics have been discussed in depth. I’m curious if anyone has done a full exhaust from AA downpipe to axle back with all possible restrictions like hi flow cats and resonators and the sound of it. I would like to change it all out at once to avoid cutting the exhaust but I’ll do it if I have to

Some people really preferred the ZCP with the 437s over the 666s and were actively looking for those when they came out. Not a lot of people ordered them with the 437s I don't think because I believe the 666s were always standard on the ZCP so you had to either change them out in the order or people traded them often on the forums here.

Congrats on the F80, love mine and will drive it until the wheels fall off!

Congrats on your F80! Definitely post some pics and let us see it.

As for exhaust, I went with AA equal length midpipe (non-resonated) and I LOVE how it sounds now. It retains the factory valves in the competition muffler. Loud when you want it and then friendly neighborhood car enthusiast when you come back home.

I plan on keeping the stock downpipes and stock tune. If you plan on doing catless downpipes, I've seen a lot of people recommend some variation of the following setup.

catless DP's - single midpipe - competition/aftermarket muffler.

resonated catless DP's - single midpipe/equal length - competition/aftermarket muffler.

The S55 can sound so different depending on the exhaust setup you pick. It really comes down to what you want out of the car.

I'm more of the OEM+ side but to each their own. Congrats again!

437 all day over the 666 wheels, you did well.

Enjoy the car!

Congrats on your new F80! It takes awhile even on track to use 100% of the stock power/torque so smart move in sticking with stock power.

I have the AA single midpipe + AA three-can rear muffler (with SS or CF-SS tips) and I think it sounds great for a S55. It’s loud but not obnoxiously loud. Zero drone and maybe just a touch of rasp under certain rpm-throttle combinations. I’d strongly recommend this setup to anyone.

Love my AA Equal Length midpipe non-resonated.

Chose the non-res because I am in CA and dunno if I want the headache of downpipes.

But I am super happy with the sound and don’t even want downpipes now.

It screams in tunnels and sounds so good. And as others said, you keep the stock backbox with the valves. When I want it quiet, it stays quiet. But when I want it loud, it goes loud. No drone.

Only thing I want to do is the valve controller to leave the valves open all the time when I want to. I want full control.

When I was buying my F82 new in 2019, it was like all competition cars had 666 wheels lol. It was basically an easy identifier on the dealership lot haha.

IMO 437m wheels are better due to better and more affordable tire selection and less harshness due to the thinner sidewall and lesser chance of bending the rim from a pothole. Along with easier to clean due to less spokes. You essentially had to use ceramic coating or else cleaning would be a nightmare.

Congrats on the purchase

Would do the crank hub and also get engine fully serviced as fairly high miles before you start trying to crank more HP.

Thank you everyone, the wheels have definitely grown on me. Already collecting the first pieces to lower my car on The KW Has kit and some spacers to fill out these wheel wells. I will definitely be getting other wheels for the car later down the road. Unfortunately previous owners can’t park near curbs so there is some curb rash on these wheels. The car still needs to be washed by me, the dealer only rinsed the car it’s continued to rain in LA every weekend so haven’t touched the car. The wheels need to be removed and have a deep clean and remove old wheel weight residue.

Congrats!!

I'm in the same boat. Picked up s set of CTS catless downpipes, M Performance Carbon Mirror Caps, and ordering my KW HAS kit as well.

I have to remove my wheels as well and clean the old wheel weight residue, especially cause my wheels are the Orbit Gray Matt finish. The white tape sticks out.

Congrats!

You should look into coilovers instead of springs. Get it corner balanced. Recommend West End for that

Wheels can be fixed by Onsite Wheels / Son Tran

I don’t think I will be doing Coilovers on this car. I’ve done Coilovers on my last two car because I like the adjustability from them and well the base suspension was no adaptive suspension like this. I’m more of a street driver and I’ve never tracked a car but i do get into some fun in the canyons. I do want to track the car at some point but it won’t be a regular thing unless I fall in love with it and find myself going back out there then maybe I’ll consider Coilovers

There's a couple coilovers that offer EDC on the platform. Bilstein B16s and KW DDC at the least. The OEM struts will usually blow out prematurely from lowering springs but, on top of better performance with coils, I guess it depends how long you're keeping this car.

Bimmerlink allows you to control the valves from your phone. All you need is to have an OBD II adapter plugged in and you can change the exhaust valves whenever you want.
