Re-purpose old F80 key fob for new F80?
I have the 2nd key fob from my prior F80 which was totaled and went to salvage. I replaced it with an F80 CS (which only came with one key). Anyone know if I can get that old fob re-programmed to work with the new car?

It can be done with the correct software. You need to ask an auto locksmith. Theres a couple ways to do it though and they might charge you 200 or more depending on the locksmith and method you choose.
You can wipe a used key back to virgin mode or copy a good key profile to it and create a new key slot for it. It involves removing the FEM module from the car and programming it with the new key info. You must also have a good working keyfob to get the special code and program it to the used key. The used keyfob will also need to be the same frequency. I think it will be hard to find a locksmith with the correct software to reprogram a used key or make it a virgin key. Its much easier to find one with the software to program a virgin key but most of the keyfobs are replicas and not from oem. I went with the virgin replica and swapped the circuit board into a geniune used X5 bmw keyfob case. The replica was made of metal and heavy. The genuine is made of plastic. It was 200 for locksmith(replica keyfob included), 30 for used x5 keyfob off ebay and 30 for the key cut back in 2020. Last edited by hC1001; 03-09-2023 at 09:09 AM.. |
