Would you daily drive an M4 20k+ miles a year?

I've wanted an M4 for several years now and currently looking at '16-'18 low mile used ones. Have found a '16 with only 15k miles on it and well taken care of.

So that's it really, would you buy that car and drive it 20k miles a year as a daily?

Also, If you don't mind. Could you refresh my memory on the functional changes between the 16's and 18's?

TIA,
Tom

I’d love to put on 20k a year! These cars are awesome.

16 was the first year of comp package - get that.
17 had better idrive
18 had better headlamps

Thanks for the input, and summary of changes.
I'm definitely looking with a bit of a preference for the Comp Pkg. Love those wheels and exhaust.

I've driven my M4 21000 miles this year already. Only issue I've had is the intercooler leak so I ended up replacing that one with the CSF which was $2K.

Maintenance can be relatively affordable if you're comfortable with DIY. Tommy has a lot of helpful videos on his YouTube channel that you can check out.

Since I plan on keeping the car long term, I do intend on getting the crank hub fix.

Totally, but only if I have have budgeted or set aside ~5k a year in repairs as mileage increases and warranty expires.

That's how I think about my Mini Cooper S. I know it will cost me 2k -3k a year (water pump, timing chain, etc etc). But I love it some much. They say I can't afford that I will find something under warranty, lease, etc.

I don't daily the F80 because of safety at the train station.

You replace the water pump and timing chain every year? I mean it's a chain. Must be a lot of miles

Not every year! But I guess you are not familiar with Mini Coopers R56 and the engine and reliability issues. The timing chain issue is a major one and an involved repair. And there are many other issues. But they are such great daily drivers.

I've never put that kind of yearly mileage on a car - for what you are considering, I'd look at the new M340i - less expensive to buy and close to same performance according to Car and Driver.

Yeah, Car and Driver is trash and M340i is nowhere near the same car as the M3/M4, not even in the same universe. I've had both a few times over.

Absolutely would drive that many miles a year. The F8x platform is so much fun to drive. I've had a 6MT and now a DCT F8x and both equally amazing. I look forward to driving it every day.

Yes, it’s a good daily driver. I do 40k a year. 138k no problems.

So you've driven an M340i? Not a 340i, a 2020 M340i? I'm not that big a fan of C&C either, but their performance test figures look similar for both cars - although I wonder if their F80 test wasn't accurate.

I agree, the M340i is no where near the same as an M3/M4. I was at the BMW Autocross event and they had the M340i to run AX with, the transmission is slower at shifting, the gas pedal isn't as sensitive and it required a constant mashing past the kickdown to get any real "throw you back in your seat" sensation, and the steering isn't as precise (all compared to the F8X). But overall, the M340i is still a good car because it does a lot of things better than like 90% of cars on the road.

I drove my '15 25k miles per year. My '18 will get less miles because I have a winter car now, but I still drive the M most of the time. I see no reason not to daily this car.

I am not sure what your concerns are, but I had no issues in over 80k on the 15. I also took it on multiple 10 hour+ road trips with the family and comfort was great.

Yes. As a owner of several German cars, the more you drive them the better they perform. Low mileage later year German cars are the ones to avoid due to seals and other maintenance items aging due to lack of lubrication on a regular basis. Garage queens arent always well maintained. Drive Her.....!!!!

Yes but would factor in the increased maintenance cost and possibly needing to get the rid of the car earlier if you aren’t comfortable keeping post warranty

Honestly, with that level of mileage, I personally would look into EV or a super reliable fun depreciated car like s2k

could I ? sure

would I? no

I did that with my f30 335. Not much went wrong... only had to change the charge pipe. But even after a year the front bumper clear bra already had cuts and holes in it from rocks and salt. And I had to get one windshield replaced. then a crack repaired on the replacement. There was also a license plate imprint in the back bumper from someone who can't park.

plus im just too OCD about my paint.
