Recommended f80 oil change
So if this has been asked too many times my fault, so I see the book recommended 0w-30 for my 2015 f80 m3 but I see people pouring in 5w-30 or even 5w-40 oil viscosity. What is the reason or why no one follows the oem specs? lol
What do you guys use and I went to FCP website and the specs all over the place... darn. Any pointers anyone??? |

I feel you, even after doing a bunch of digging here online it was tough to come up with a consensus oil suggestion. From what I gathered, a lot of folks recommend Castrol 0w40 (which you can get cheap at Walmart along with Mobile1 0w40), but I’m going with my mechanic’s recommendation of Motul Sport 5w40.

I use Castrol 0w-40 - cheap, easy to find at Walmart, and has a pretty stellar reputation for what it is. I change every 5k or 6 mo's (whichever is first). Oil type and OCI just depend on how you use your car and how hard you drive when you drive it. If I pickup tracking as a regular hobby, I'll probably switch up to Motul Sport 5w-40 off the recommendation of edycol in other threads on this board

The original manual stated BMW 0w-40 (produced by Castrol) as an option, and as I understand, most 0w-40 lost BMW LL01 certification when BMW updated their requirements (and also dropped Castrol as their supplier). My only requirement for oil is wear resistance as I like to drive my car spirited to hard, as such, I don't give any consideration to LL01-FE oils which BMW recommends for fuel efficiency purposes but it gives up wear protection. It's also the reason that I have relatively short OCIs, to get fresh oil in proactively (possibly unnecessarily in some instances but oil is cheap). Castrol 0w-40 is still Porsche A40 and MB 229.5 certified, and FWIW Castrol is now the official oil supplier of BMW again. Generally you would go with a 40 oil over a 30 as the 40 will protect an engine more and maintain its viscosity at higher temps.
Nothing wrong with just following the manual and going for an LL01 0w-30 or 5w-30. Really just depends how you drive and what you feel comfortable putting in your engine.

I just changed to AMSOIL 5-40 synthetic European Motor oil, it's LL-01. AMSOIL has a couple of different synthetic European car oils that are LL-01.

But a good buddy of mine who tracks and beats the sh*t out of his car often, runs Motul 300v 15w-50 in his F80 and his car is happy with that according to the Blackstone analysis. We run higher viscosities since our cars produce more heat, the 0w-30 would be too thin for our application. Also, on the owners manual, it lists the different viscosity levels you can run.

If you’re not driving really hard a lot (or participate in circumstances that generate a lot of engine heat) then LL01 5w-30 will do just fine
