Buying previously tuned 2018 M3

Hi all,

I have a deposit on a 2018 M3 with Comp, Exec, Driver Assist that was supposed to be certified.

Late in the process, the dealer found that the previous owner had a BM3 tune on the car, which means they can't CPO it and they said it voids the remainder of the warranty for the drivetrain. I'm not sure how long the tune's been installed, but the car has 20k miles. I was not planning on tuning for my own peace of mind.

The dealer is offering to include a 3rd party exclusionary warranty - I don't yet have full details on the mileage/years covered.

Looking for any suggestions on additional inspections I should get done, or opinions on moving forward or not.

Personally I would pass based on your post. You wanted CPO for peace of mind, and now that's not possible. You'll likely face a nonstop power struggle over what is and isn't covered by going through a third party warranty vs BMW.

And let's face it, most people who put bootmod on their M are going to beat on the car more. Just my two cents. Be patient and keep looking for CPO options.

Personally I would want to tune anyway so this would be a nice negotiation tool, but if you don't want to tune then it's a pretty easy pass.

I had a 3rd-party warranty from the dealer on my M4 and the first time I tried to use it they made me jump through so many hoops that I just cancelled it and got my money back. I solved that one issue with some forum research and just cycling the battery anyway.

Yes avoid at all cost!

Not worth getting a 2018 with low km and no warranty. Those 3rd party warranties can be a joke. They try to find ways to decline the claim and if you have a deductible itís a waste of money. Iím surprised they want to offer you a 3rd party warranty vs their own. Sounds like a money grab on their end knowing the possibility of them declining your claim.

Chances are that car will sit on their lot for a while unless the price is reduced by a good amount that people overlook the factory warranty.

Pass. Plenty of cars that haven't been tuned are out there.

From my more or less daily perusal of the engine section for the last 3 years, I can remember a few things that are varying degrees of expensive that may randomly go out or need replacement/service.

- Leaking charge air cooler
- Pre/post cat O2 sensors
- Spun crank hub
- Valvetronic servomotor
- Coil pack

With the crank hub you could probably throw on a CBC and be fine for the life of the engine, but any of those other parts could be expensive to replace (even if the wrong O2 sensor goes out) that otherwise would have been completely covered if you had your powertrain warranty. None of these issues are common, but I wouldn't want to front the cost if I didn't need to. Tuned cars only push these components further.

I appreciate all the advice everyone. My gut feeling was to pass on this once I learned about the tune.

My search for a 2018 M3 with DCT, Comp, Exec, and a sunroof continues...

Iím surprised they wouldnít reflash to factory, do an inspection and certify it. I bought a 2018 ZCP Vert with 2,500 miles and the head unit had to be immediately replaced and one wheel has so much road rash, the repair is coming off it. CPO isnít tightly monitored apparently and the dealership did very little to ensure it was in working order. Passing is the right call for sure.

Wouldn't touch it, but not my call. Personally wouldn't buy a used "M" without extreme knowledge of its past. Tuners & Trackers....

How can you really know if a car was tuned?

If I'm not mistaken, MHD and possibly BM3 are able to reset the flash count, so how would you know? Also, if you used a JB4, there would be no modifications to the DME.

Doesn't need to even be tuned. If you coded your car for anything, even non engine related (turn off ASD, turn off seatbelt reminders...etc.), and they ever flag the car or catch it BMW will void engine/drivetrain warranty and it can't be CPO'ed. Happened to my 1st F80 that was never tuned. They've just cracked down on this stuff with a no questions asked warranty denial.

I would pass. Thereís a lot of tuned cars out there. At least they found out and told you ahead of time rather than selling it to you and then voiding the warranty. Keep looking. This car is no fun without a warranty and Iím pretty sure they will make you pay for the third party warranty out of your pocket.

I think they can still tell. My boy told me that they are able to tell if boost pressure was increased. I keep resetting my codes that pop up weeks before I go into the dealership and they even ask me about those.

I donít tune my cars, I wouldnít buy a car with one, if they voided the warranty I would keep looking. No chance I would take a 3rd party warranty over BMW Certified.

Ahh, the rare spotted snow leopard... I mean sunroof. Good luck with the search. While do miss having one, I will say, it's not that bad without it. Just don't settle on color!!!

All but one 4-wheeled vehicles I've owned has had a sunroof and I had them open every chance I got.

Not being picky on color, as I'm planning on wrapping it if it's not Wray I want.

Love the sunroof - I suspect there would be more out there if dealers knew they could click the box for free.....but they ordered all of these overweight cars with carbon fiber roof
