This works every single time
Locate the program/memory button on the back of the garage door opener motor (the thing hanging from the ceiling). Once you have found the button, park in front of your garage door with the garage door open. Leave the vehicle running and make sure to have the original garage door opener inside the car. Press and hold #1 and #3 on the rear view mirror until the little light next to #1 begins to flash at a rapid rate. This will delete the internal memory. Next, press the program/memory button on the back of the garage door opener motor. A light will flash on the motor. While it is flashing, simultaneously press the original garage door opener button and the #1 button on the rear view mirror. Hold both until the light on the garage door opener motor goes out. Then press the program/memory button on the back of the garage door opener motor once more. While it is flashing, hold #1 on the rear view mirror. When the light on the garage door opener goes out, let go. Here is the tricky part, press #1 on the rear view mirror 3 times. You have to press it just as seconds tick on a clock. Count out loud 1 Mississippi, 2 Mississippi, 3 Mississippi and then HOLD the button the 4th time. You will hold it for a couple of seconds and then the door should close.

Programming the garage opener on the bmw is a headache. I am surprised that they couldn't make it easier. So far I have only been able to program the only 1 button (left button) and have been unable to program the middle and right buttons.
They should have installed a 4th button to be used as a learning button on the rear view mirror that you could simultaneously press with the button (1,2, or 3) on the rear view mirror in addition to your garage opener. In comparison, it takes me less than 3 seconds to program a learning remote for my tv!! |

I went through this a couple of weeks ago. The manual directions are horrible..
I assume you are programing a roving code type remote, right? here is how I did it: Step one: after screwing around on many attempts to program, I reset the homelink buttons on the mirror so they are empty and start clean. Step two: Program one of the buttons on the mirror as if you are programing a non-roving remote. Step Three: Use a ladder to climb up to the garage door motor assembly, take the cover off and looks for a button that says "Learn" or such. Step Four: make sure your car is as close as possible to the opener's motor, Keep the car running and the car door open wide. Press the learn button on the motor assembly, and now you have 30 seconds to get off the ladder, jump into the car, and press the button on the mirror (the one you programed earlier) You are done.

They have a site with instructions.
If you have a roaming code, you need to teach the car the handhelds code, then you can go and find the garage door opener. http://www.homelink.com/program/garagedooropener |

If you have a modern (less than 10 years) major brand garage door opener, you most likely have a roving code oppener.

No, you need the garage door remote in order to program the homelink buttons on the mirror.

When you program the buttons on the mirror, the car "copies" the radio signal from your garage remote and "saves" it in one of the mirror buttons.

Programming the garage opener
Having trouble programming this thing. Can they do it at the dealer or it has to be done in front of the garage? Thanks!
