Excessive differential noise?

hey guys. i'm spinning off a new thread from the water pump noise thread to ask a different question.

my GTS makes a loud whining (whirring?) noise from the diff. it varies with engine speed - gets louder at higher engine speeds, and vice versa. i know differential noise isn't necessarily a bad thing, but i had it checked out by my dealer just to be 100% sure.

they told me that they checked the car out thoroughly and everything was in good working order. the main reason i hear it so clearly, they said, is because the GTS has such little sound insulation. all this sounds logical to me, but since i'm the way i am and can't leave anything alone, i wanted to ask you guys - do your GTS's have discernible differential noise while you're driving?

if we're all in the same boat, then i'll just go on driving and not give this another thought.

At slow speeds maybe.. i don't recall it being noticeable at other times, but again, its isnt something I was paying attention to. I can try and listen to it next time I drive the car.

update on this : tried to live with it for two months, my gut wouldn't let me rest on it. so i took it to a different place.

test drove with the tech in the front seat, put it up on the lift, ran diagnostics...boom. hard fault codes detected, need to replace the entire diff.

always trust your gut

Is it at all related to the driveshaft recall? If not, if you're car is affected, may as well do it together..

You may get a free oil change out of this since the new diff will have to do a break in service after 1200 miles

Apparently no. We checked the VIN out while we were doing the work order and it was clear of recalls. Some good news, at least!

Is this a recalled and replaced differential that went bad?

Blank

No, it was the original one. I'm not aware of any recall specific to the diff...?

They were recalled and the cars were held in Germany until repaired. It was a big fiasco.
