Where I live I don't think insurance would cover this at all. First thing they ask for a stolen car : give us the 2 keys. And unless they broke into the house to steal them or something you'd be utterly screwed as it would fall into negligence from you... Hope you are covered tho...

As long as it's not fraud or misrepresentation, an insurance company would pay for a stolen vehicle, regardless of the circumstances. |

Sorry if I am a bit late to this thread, I have another thread open about my own M3 which was stolen here in the UK and thought I was chime in.
Reading through the replies here it seems like either US car owners are very naive or thieves there in the US are very very basic? Going by what happened to my car and what I was later told by the police. In the UK M3/4 and any sports cars that are keyless go being stolen is very common and from what I hear happening 100's of times a year in the UK. Cars are stolen without keys in the two below ways. Firstly devices which boost the key signal from within a 10-20m radius. Typically thieves will walk around your property with said booster in hand and make a clone of your key as long as the device can pick up the signal from inside your house. Secondly they use a device which copies the key from up to 60m where they sit with laptop in hand which waits for you to lock or unlock your car. Once you do either of those they now have a copy of your key signal which is later used to steal your car. My car was stolen using method one, unlock with a copy of my key then pushed down the road and started up so no one would hear it. How to prevent this? Very hard. Faraday key pouches work but are not 100% Ghost alarms can now be by passed. The police advised me to drill a pedal box into my next car if I wanted to make sure it wasn't stolen. The bottom line was if someone wants your car badly enough they will take it. Lastly as for BMW connected drive, my cars GPS location flashed up once after my car was stolen. The police were told by BMW and so was I when I called them that turning off the connected drive "is very very easy" and they would not recommend any owners to use that location as the actual location of their car as they do not stand by it being accurate and nor do they claim for it to be... LOL WHAT? The police in my instance then even went to BMW Germany for further info who also replied back to say the connected app shouldn't be used as a means to give you an accurate reading of where the car is or ever was. The police later told me that the moment thieves now steal cars they will put in a signal jammer into the USB port therefore almost all GPS locators are rendered useless. They said the reason my car flashed up for a second is that its likely that whilst driving away in my car for a moment the USB jammer was dislodged and my GPS kicked in again before they noticed and put it back in. They said the jammers are extremely effective and as of yet they don't know of any trackers that can get past the devices thieves are using in the UK. OP happy for you that your insurance will pay out. Guys as this gets more and more common learn from mine and OPs lessons and secure your cars best you can. |

Shot in the dark here but if you're interested I'm selling a 2015 M4 still under BMW extended vehicle warranty (same as CPO but I had to pay $5K for it) that is transferrable to new owner. Black over Shakir orange, HRE wheels, 38,000 mi no engine mods. Other than some slight chips on hood, flawless inside and out. $36,000

There was a news report on thieves using a ipad looking device to pick up the signal off of key fobs when the owner uses it to unlock their car door or even start their car. The thief can be standing up to 50 feet away and they can duplicate this signal to steal cars. They showed a video of thieves doing this in a mall parking lot and then stealing the cars at the owners home. Crazy but technology leaves a lot of room for hackers and crooks.
