F8x M4 vs. B9 RS5

Interesting article I found over at audizine. I'm still looking to switch back to BMW with an F80 M3 but looks like Audi is ditching the NA V8 for a V6. Not sold on the styling either but it's only a front-on render. Also, this info comes from CAR magazine so it may only be speculation. This segment will be interesting in the coming years!

If you like driving go for the M3, if you like talking 0-60 figures with a beer in your hand go Audi

Oh absolutely.. I enjoy my s4 as a DD, but it leaves something to be desired in the driving characteristics department. I'm a BMW guy and I'd love to buy an e9x m3 right now but it would be financially irresponsible for me to do so :/ but damn am I tempted lol so I'll wait it out for the F80; if it's a blast, I'll go for that. If not, CPO e9x M3 most likely.

To take with a big grain of salt, info/rumor is the F80 did 0-100 km/h in with launch-control in 3.5 sec. Consider the Alpina B3 Biturbo /xDrvie does that in 4.2/4.0 sec. Note that M3 is more than 100 kg lighter, has more than 50 PS more, has M-Diff and has DCT which is faster at shifting, so as launch control of course.

The RS5 will probably be awesome in a straight line.... then understeer will prevail in the corners.

Again, that is not true anymore. RS5 is not faster than M3 not even to 60 mph. Next generation will be no different as both will be turbocharged, so have equal weapons. Only next C AMG will very likely be faster.

As much as I would like that to be true, I somehow doubt a RWD car will get to 100km/h in 3.5 seconds on a street with street tyres simply not enough traction. As for DCT helping, you would probably only do one gear change to 100.

As for it doing 0-100km/h (62mph) as fast as a 4WD Audi, not going to happen, sorry.

Do not underestimate the progress Mercedes made. Look, SL AMG is faster than M6.

While I agree MB have made strides, much of this closing gap is due to the current M5 and M6 being 10% heavier than they should be. Both are very weighty even compared to their immediate V10 forbearers.

Definitely very speculative info, but it seems like a reasonable direction for Audi. Porsche has a new 3L TT V6 for the refreshed Panamera (replacing the naturally aspirated V8, there too in fact), so it would not be too surprising to see Audi go the same way. Although it isn't clear yet if this particular engine will be shared with the rest of the VAG brands.

So if this comes to pass it would make the score: BMW 3.0, Audi 3.0, Mercedes 4.0. It will indeed be interesting to watch. Of course, Mercedes has a 3.0L V6 coming online next year as well, but they plan to keep the V8 in the C class AMG for at least one more generation.

Bentley (part of VAG group) is rumoured to be bringing out a V6 TT powered hybrid, so very plausible.

I'll hold off judgement until we see how capable the MLB platform is mated with a lighter engine. There's no denying that the M3 has much better balance, but the torque vectoring capabilities on the new Audi e-quattro should narrow the margin. The rear diff already does a great job of counteracting understeer in all B8 models that carry it.

I'm hoping to be living in a warmer climate where AWD isn't "as necessary", so should be a great fight for my $$$.

I agree...the torque vectoring is great however it does still understeer more than I'd like; still the sports diff does give you more RWD-like characteristics. I love the awd in bad weather however this winter was pretty tame so I didn't get to enjoy its full potential. I'm loving the F80 so far and have been watching the news releases like a hawk. The reason I like the B8 RS5 is because the engine is a screamer V8 like the current M3. The interior is pretty much exactly the same as my S4 so no difference there. If both are going back to 6's next go-around, I'll most likely go with the M.

I hope the B9's will have more R8/Porsche AWD handling characteristics. I know an S4 will hang the tailout but it's pretty hard to do. I love the S4 and S5 but I like my sports cars a little more tail happy.

I won't even question the e92 m3 vs b8 rs5, the weight difference makes it a silly comparo. I'm really interested in the b9 hybrid drivetrain. Pretty much eliminate the complex center diff and use motors to drive the front wheels. If a 3.0TT is powering JUST the rear wheels, and motors are torque steering the front wheels in addition to an active rear diff, it will be hard to chose the M4 over the RS5.

I went with the B8.5 S4 over the F30 for a multitude of reasons, but BMW is really the car to beat here, the M3 holds THE crown, we'll have to wait and see...either way I'll have a badass sports car

My understanding is that the e-Quattro system will use electric motors to drive the rear wheels, not the front wheels. That makes the most sense to me given that it eliminates the driveshaft and supporting hardware which will be needed to offset the weight of the batteries and other hybrid-related systems. I suppose they could do it the other way around for performance models, but it doesn't strike me as very likely. I would say that a traditional, non-electric AWD system instead of e-Quattro is probably the better bet for an RS model.

F80 DCT tested, 0-100 km/h is achieved in 3,5 sec with launch control.

Yup, I read this was the approach for the A4 and agree with all of your assessments. But the S4/S5 will retain the V6, so there's no way they don't drive the rear wheels with the engine, but you're probably right about using the current crown center quattro AWD system. Guess I'm just building up false hope

Also - Audi doesn't need to worry about added weight in the back, car is too nose heavy as it is. I do think they moved the front axle further forward on MLB which should help a lot.

That is just silly fast, especially for a RWD car

If specs are correct, F80 weighs 25 kg, has 50 PS and 140 Nm more than 991 S.
