I think what happened is that the oil hit the center pan drain stopper.

I’m like some others, I drain the oil from bottom and then loosen oil filter. I work on assembling the new filter and wiping the top while it drains.

I’ll usually refill from the filter housing before torquing the cap back on, obviously retorquing the bottom bolt first.

Haha yes sir - that's exactly what happened...and it resulted in the most perfect refraction onto my camera ...the camera still smells like oil today, but it works without any issues!

what pisses me off is the 1/4 qt of oil stuck in the oil filter housing.

I got a fluid suction bulb from mityvac to deal with this.......

Why would you discard it? Save it and either use it for next oil change or top off if your car consumes oil.

Just for clarification, at the beginning of the video when you're unscrewing the black plastic part, you keep calling it the oil filter housing. You are in no way removing the oil filter housing! The black plastic part that you are removing is the filter cover or the oil filter cap.

The oil filter housing is a separate engine component (aluminum alloy) that holds the oil filter and it's what the oil filter cap screws onto. On our previous 335is Coupe, the oil filter housing had to be removed and the gasket between it and the engine block had to be replaced because it started leaking. Not the same thing!

In the following diagram, the oil filter housing is item #1 and the oil filter cap is item #2:

The best thing to put under the oil catch pan is an oil spill mat. I used one for years called a Pig Mat, but this is the one I currently use, available at Amazon:

Great video. I think with the oil hitting the camera you probably got side tracked. But unless I missed it, the copper washer at the 2:57 mark didn't make it in the video to the drain plug. I believe that needs to be replaced from the drain plug before it is reinstalled under the car.

Keep the videos coming. Thanks!

The copper washer for the drain plug that came with my new (OEM) filter was smaller in diameter then the one that's on car (MY2015). The filter and the filter retaining washer are the same. Any suggestions?

Perhaps reach out to whoever sent it to you and ask them to send you a replacement? Or, I hate to say it but you could potentially reuse the old copper washer. Yes you might have a drip here or there but it should not be catastrophic

Same problem I had. I went to the auto store and found a washer. It was too large in OD but worked.

I had to buy a set of washers from ECS that also came with a magnetic plug.

Moderators, maybe create this thread as a sticky so it doesn’t get lost in the shuffle.

Tommy, thanks for creating the Youtube video and for posting it here. Indeed, it is very easy as a DIY. It is only slightly more effort than on my prior Audi B5 S4. I can confirm that if you keep the oil filter cap on and the oil filler cap half closed, it drains at a much more predictable rate and won't spill all over the place. It will take longer, but more oil will end up in the used oil collection container versus the garage floor.

I wish I read your post before I changed my oil today! It gushed out but I was ready for it due to OPs video.

And thanks for the video OP! This was my first ever oil changing experience. Because of how easy your video showed it to be.

I changed the engine oil, gearbox and diff this weekend. I laughed hard when I got the same splash that Tommy did. It's the plastic screen causing it.

A-HA! An idea... I cut the bottom off a coffee can and sat it on top of the drain pan screen like a little chimney. Now the can blocks the wind and keeps the oil splash inside.

The MT and Diff didn't gush but the can sure stopped the wind so could let it all drip out and not blow everywhere.
