Nearly a month ago, we spotted the first non-black F82 M4 coupe prototype (in Silverstone) on the road (reposted below). We've just spied a Silverstone F82 M4 testing on the Nurburgring, wearing M Carbon Ceramic Brakes. This prototype doesn't reveal any new physical details, but we do have a new technical detail to share.

We were recently told by a high-ranking BMW M official intimately familiar with M3/M4 development that the engine powering the M3/M4 will feature a nearly 8000 RPM redline. As we've reported all along, the M3/M4's S55 engine will be an inline 6 cylinder with mutiple turbos, outputting around 100 lb-ft more torque and approximately same horsepowers as the current M3 (S65) engine. For comparison, the current M3 engine redlines at 8400 RPM.

With this newest details, we've updated our M3/M4 features list:

• Lighter than current M3 (targeting E46 M3 weight (source))
• More powerful than current M3 (approximately same HP (confirmation?), but around 100 lb-ft more torque (in range of 395 lb-ft) (source)
• Faster than current M3
• More efficient than current M3
• Powered by "S55" inline 6 cylinder multi turbo engine (source, source, source)
• Nearly 8k RPM redline (told to us by high-ranking BMW M Official intimately involved in BMW M3/M4 development)
• DCT and manual transmission options
• Optional M Carbon Ceramic Brakes
• Rumored Electric Power Steering (completely reworked for precision for M3/M4)
• Prototype Tires (from prototype) - Michelin Pilot Super Sport: 255/35/19 (front), 275/35/19 (rear)
• Front styling to feature elements from the M6 and 1M coupe, with Air Curtain technology
• Hood features power bump / dome
• Kidney grilles feature double-slats with M3/M4 badge
• F82 M4 coupe to feature double-bubble sculpted carbon fiber roof (like M6 Coupe), with optional sunroof
• M3 and M4 Introduced late 2013 - early 2014 (concept debuts earlier)
• European Delivery begins June 2014, at earliest

Nearly 8000rpm? That's new info!

With that high of rpm I think people will be happy with the turbo 6 engine.

Thanks for sharing.

Near 8k redline? Where did that info come from?

It states the M4 deliveries don't begin until 2014. Is that a mistake? I thought deliveries begin 2015. That would be great if m4 deliveries begin within a few months of m3 deliveries. Looking to be one of the first owners.

Thanks!

Edit:

Thanks for updating the delivery dates, and the source of the 8k redline!

M3 European Delivery begins June 2014, at earliest
M4 hits dealers no earlier than late 2014 - early 2015

So you're telling me I may have one of these in time for Christmas '14, huh?

Can you get an 8k redline with 420 HP and 395 ft. lbs? Seems a bit high.

I can't mention names but we were told so by someone who is intimately involved in BMW M3/M4 development.

Is that the first time we've seen the M mirrors on the prototype?

They've been seen on recent prototypes as well. But they are still camouflaged.

Nothing is new here except for the doubtful 8k rpm red-line which to me sounds impossible with that many turbos attached to an I6 that boasts around 415HP and 400 lb.ft torque..
If that's true, I'm all for it, I guess they're trying to make up for loss in the capability of a high-reving V8..

edit: E46 M3 had an 8k RPM redline too, my comment is flawed lol

If they're making 420 horsepower at 8,000RPM then torque will be at 275lb/ft at redline. 420 horsepower at 7,500RPM translates to about 295lb/ft at that same RPM. If the horsepower and torque figures we've been hearing turn out to be correct, then this motor will be losing power quickly as you approach redline (like the current N54/N55 but I expect an M motor to have a better power curve). If you compare that to the power curves for the current S63tü, it makes almost 80% of its peak torque at redline while these rumored power figures would mean the S55 in the new M3 will barely make 70% of peak torque at redline so I still believe the real horsepower figure will be higher than 420, despite the rumors. We'll see.

F1 tech in the 80s had turbos revving way higher. And using less advanced materials. They could easily make a turbo engine that hits 8k+ ... Thr would make this engine more special to me and would then Be on my buy list. I remember a year ago I emailed BMW NA saying I woul buy the the I model if they could keep the f1 style revs lets hope they pull this off.

+1
If the car redlines to 8K, then the specs should be more along 450 hp, 380 lb-ft... should be a bigger differential b/t hp and torque.

"Nearly 8000 rpm" means not quite 8000 RPM though.

I reverse-engineered the numbers to match the 415hp and the ~395lb-ft claimed figures. Assuming a redline of 7500 to 8000 and a power curve that looks similar to the one of the S63tu, I came up with the following output.

To me at least, it appears that all surmised numbers could very well be the nearly whole truth

Name:  m4-s55.jpg
Views: 43342
Size:  76.2 KB

Of course, max torque would be converted from NM so here are other possible torque values:

540NM = 398.28lb-ft
535NM = 394.59lb-ft
530NM = 390.90lb-ft
520NM = 383.53lb-ft

But with playing the above and the RPM one can easily hit the desired hp output

Well done. This is precisely what I was thinking.

Of note is that torque precipitously drops off after 5,500 rpm. So the "top end" won't have that rush a NA motor will have. Quite different from the S62 in terms of engine driving dynamics. Sort of like the N55 now, doesn't feel as strong after 5,000 rpm.
