2018 M4 without touchscreen

My M4 has 12/2017 build and was wondering why it doesn't have touchscreen. At what point did this change take place? Is it standard? I don't have exec package.

Also, is enhanced Bluetooth standard or part of exec?

I thought they had touchscreens after 7/17. You sure it was built 12/2017? Have no reason to doubt you, just intrigued.

Not sure on the enhanced Bluetooth.

I think M4 didn't get touchscreen. Only M3 did. Can any M4 owners confirm that they got touchscreen?

Yes 100% sure. Even the BMW 'Genius' didn't know why.

That's what I thought, figured you'd actually look that up, but it's hard to know when someone is new on the forum. Maybe the MY18 didn't get touchscreen. My wife's F80 has it, we have never use it. We find the iDrive controller so convenient that I forgot it existed, haha.

I thought I had read this as well, but several hours ago I wasn’t sure enough to post it.

Thanks for the answers. That's a little odd that they did that.

Anyone know if enhanced Bluetooth is standard of part of executive pack? People have trouble hearing me clearly when on Bluetooth.

I was expecting touch screen as well. My April 2018 build M4 doesn't have it.

on my 18 M4, if i slide my finger on the top of the screen, a tab with radio presets comes up, but will not let you select any of them via touch. To think that it has a functioning touch screen but you cant use it. very odd

Due to numerous problems with my wife's 2011 335is lately, I've had several 2018 330i loaners while her car was in the shop. All of them, with various levels of trim, have had iDrive 6.0 with a touchscreen.

After pressing Menu and having the tiles displayed on the screen, I was able to touch and hold a tile and move it back and forth. I was able to make numerous selections on numerous screens. I found that the selection and input was quite a bit faster than using the iDrive controller, but only used it while stopped, not while driving. I find Voice Command even more convenient while driving. Voice Command on the 2018 330i was a better experience than my 2016 M4.

Unfortunately, I have yet to get a 2018 M4 as a loaner, but I think it would be a bummer if the 2018 M4s didn't get the touchscreen. Not sure why they would build the cars differently, although the M3 is made in Regensburg and the M4 is made in Munich, but they should have the same suppliers.

I think it's been pretty well established here that M4s never got activated touch screen (see my next post). They were supposed to start with 7/17 production. M3s definitely got them then, but my M4 (built 7/17) does not have the functionality and no one here with an M4 did either. As a quick aside . . . there are a lot more Geniuses on this forum than at BMW!

Regarding Enhanced Bluetooth, that comes with the Wireless Charging option. If you got that option, you have Enhanced Bluetooth. However, I don't think that that will give you a better Bluetooth connection. It does provide greater Bluetooth functionality.

I also suspect that MY18 M4s actually have touch screens but the functionality has not been turned on for some crazy reason.

The reason that I say this is that members of this forum found that touch screens were setting off our laser detectors on start-up. See this thread. It happens in my car and I have been able to detect what we think is a touch screen sensor. When that sensor is covered, there's no more interference with the laser detector. So I think my M4 actually has a touch screen, but that it is not activated. So weird.

Enhanced BT option provides a few things:
  • Album art
  • Ability to scroll through an album/playlist (instead of just being able to go next/previous song)
  • Additional mic on the passenger side

I kicked myself for not getting that option but I had no idea BMW hid it under the Wireless Charging option (makes no sense, thanks BMW). I believe that was a change they made on the 2018 cars.

Actually, my MY17 M3 (Nov 16 build date) sets off the laser detector on my V1 as well and the car did not come with a touchscreen. I think the issue with the monitors setting off the radar detectors has to do with the updated screen resolution/flicker rate, etc. Starting with MY17 the iDrive hardware, including the monitors, were upgraded.

Regarding the MY18 M4s having touchscreen hardware that was not turned on by BMW, that would not surprise me if BMW did that - but I don't understand why either. One way to find out would be to have a MY18 M4 owner uninstall the screen to take a look at the sticker on the back of the monitor (very easy to do) or just code the necessary parameters to turn on touchscreen and see what happens - it is only three of them. I recently retrofitted my M3 with the 8.8" OEM touchscreen and coded it using the BimmerCode app - really easy.

Thanks for that tip as well. It's a little convoluted way to get there, but the only reason that I want a touch screen is to allow easier access to the 360 camera on reverse. That's another MY18 issue and a whole other thread . . .

Does Enhanced Bluetooth also give you the ability to access text messages in iDrive, or is that possible without the 'enhanced' functionality?

I think you need Enhanced BT to get that feature. I can't access text messages on my non-Enhanced BT M3.

I've got enhanced BT, and most of the features above, but I only have next/prev. Is my car missing a flag that I have to code in? '18 F80. (I'm referring to steering wheel scroll via cluster/hud - feature works on wife's m235 but not on my car.)

It seems to be disabled for 2018. Default is rear view and there seems to be no way to default it to the 360. I presume it might have something to do with the rear view camera law that started in MY2018s? It's darn annoying though.

And, no touch screen on my '18 M4.

M4s do not have touchscreen. Only M3 had.
I have 2018 M4 ZCP, fully optioned and no touch screen. My build was Nov 2017.

Just picked up an 18 m4 comp I can confirm the 2018 m4 does have the touchscreen built in. The option is turned off from the factory. Not sure why BMW did that. I just used bimmercode to turn on the touchscreen option. Works perfectly, especially for CarPlay. my build is 11/17
