Little update on final 4 year/50k service

Took my car in for 4/50k final check which formally included an oil change, rear diff service, and full car inspection. I mentioned two things I wanted them to look at:

- My radio preset buttons have what look like ring scratches...but they've developed on 4 buttons in an actual crack/hazing pattern. It's super minor and actually hard to see in some lights, but I showed it to them and they committed to fixing it.
- Occasionally during transition from stop to 1st gear roll, I feel some driveline shudder. It wasn't there when new but has been there for awhile, so I attributed it to a slightly worn in clutch/flywheel combo.

Here's their overall update on the car:

1. They felt the shudder and will replace the clutch and examine it once they get in there in case there's some further issue.
2. They'll replace the preset buttons
3. The suspension and every other system look perfect
4. Front brakes have 7/32nds left on them, rear brakes have 6/32nds on them (these are original brakes). This is consistent with iDrive showing 140k life on the front and 100k on the rear original pads.

I'll get the clutch replaced in ~2 weeks and will take pictures of what it looks like. My guess is there's a slight unevenness in the flywheel or the clutch surface that shows up as a bit of wobble during 1st gear engagement. It never slips - ever - so it's not like the clutch friction material has worn out in 50k. Just sharing an update.

Thanks,
Joe

Hehehe, I didn't push I just asked them to feel the wobble by themselves. I wasn't in the car.

That being said, 4 years/50k miles basically was 5 oil changes, 2 rear diff services, one brake fluid flush, one spark plugchange, a few air filters....and that's about it. One change of wiper blades.

So I don't exactly feel bad they are stepping up on a replacement clutch.

Definitely don't feel bad for the dealer. Warranty work is their bread and butter!

You're still on original pads? and it's expecting to last over 100k??? Is this normal lifespan for OEM pads?

If only tires lasted this long.

The clutch shudder is pretty common it seems but if you're getting a free clutch good on ya

It’s a win/win...The service department gets paid from BMW and the car owner gets a freebie. Let’s hope they keep the warranty at 4 yrs/50k, unlike the drop of the maintenance to 3 yrs.

It's definitely not normal lifespan on any other car I've owned.

I've visually inspected the brakes plenty of times. They are truly lasting this long despite being on ventilated rotors and dusting insanely, as well as performing admirably. It's insane pad and rotor life on this type of vehicle.

My M235i had the blue sport brakes.

Obviously the rotor is different but those also had insane amounts of dusting but lasted forever.

When I handed my car in at lease end they had 45k on them and probably had another 45k left in them at the very minimum.

Yeah, honestly they removed the brakes b/c it literally made no sense to keep them on there.

The only people that needed to replace the brakes before the maintenance period was up were people who tracked the cars.

I know some people on here went through 2-3 sets of brakes before 45k. I mean at that point it's pretty obvious what's going on.

OP, I think that's all great news about customer service at warranty expiration. Thanks for posting all that.

I don't have enough mileage yet to comment on the brakes, but my brother's M4 has 45K miles and they're telling him he'll get close to 100K. His 335 brakes also got to 100K at the time he traded it on a 540 last year. Previous BMWs I've owned, going back to a 98 540i, never had anywhere near this kind of brake longevity, not by half.

but I agree. this platform has been pretty reliable so far (other than the occasional crank hub). hoping we don't find any troubles down the road. I personally haven't seen too many higher mileage cars so it's interesting to see what we see in the future.

Car could "fall apart" at 50k or above, sure.

My experience has been that you either get a lemon or you don't. Either the model is known for massive issues emerging by a certain amount of mileage or it isn't.

This is a vehicle based upon the f30 with 4 year old engines/trans/diffs widely around and plenty hitting 50k miles with some hitting up to 80k. Nothing has emerged yet as a common problem spot, and mine's been rock solid.

Let's see how I feel next year this year

I personally thought crank hub failure wasn't definitely proven not to be caused by mechanical over rev or modifications

Will be interesting to see how it all plays out

well, ultimate care covers the clutch too. The clutch in the 6MT should last longer than that right? if so Ultimate Care+ is not worth it?

If you burn out your clutch under 50k miles you have other problems. Or drag racing too much
