So I think the new m3 will also sound good. Personally I am much more interested in the driving experience, quality and fun factor than anything else. I welcome the new m3, it ticks almost all the boxes for me. If it's not for uou, you have an e9x m3 which has proven over time to be quite reliable. If uou love it, keep it! Great car |

I'm going to ask a few questions. First you state with unwavering affirmation that the new car sounds 'horrendous', and that the sound is a deal breaker. You then retract that statement within a very short period of time to state that the car sounds 'okay enough'. Now it has gone back to 'hoping' that the car is going to sound good enough. Why are you all over the place???? You are a interesting character. I state that because you make statements and then backpedal once contested. I understand what you're looking for in a car (..and we all look for something different), but if the car sounds very similar to the video clips, will you still buy the car? Yes or no? If yes, why (..considering it doesn't meet your sound criteria)? |

Same here.... ....and I still have a lot of love for the E9X and the E46 (..more for my '05 ZCP M3 however; I was most emotionally connected to that car). |

I want to like this car. You see, that's the difference between me and the other people who have issues with this car. |

Okay. Now we're getting somewhere. So you rant and rave about sound (..and how it is a veritable deal breaker), but we've just established that you'll be willing to buy the car anyway because all of the other positive attributes (...thus negating all of the tired sound arguments that you present). Great! So with that said, will you please stop harping on about sound since you'll likely end up with the F8X anyway. Save us the diatribe and be more constructive here. http://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...4#post15291614 So, are you basing your view on engine sound of the S55 from the videos that contains exhaust sound? And at some stage you don't care about exhaust sound, and they all sound "decent enough" and now it sounds like crap. You change opinion so often it sometimes seem you just made them up and then forget what you wrote previously... |

These idiotic debates should be PMs since they aren't even about the S55 engine itself anymore. It's just guys arguing with each other about whether someone defined their personal criterion for a great car 30 posts ago or not. No one wins these debates; M3Post loses as a whole. |

I think s55 will sound good but different than the current M3. Not sure how the engine will feel as none of us has driven one.
With that said, S65 definitely feels more special than my S63TU. I think all the noises coming from the engine plays a big part also. I really want the S55 to make some engine noise which I don't think is going to happen. I am sure all the power and torque will make up for it.

Is this not the real reason M chose the s55?
All the love in the world for the S65 and lots of miles behind one, but here’s what keeps coming to mind when I hear the NA engine debate. IIRC, the S65 cost a lot more to manufacture than the S55. For the F80/F82 to improve in engine performance with a NA motor, it would need to approach, let’s say – S65B44 levels. I'd imagine it would cost the same, if not more than the S65 in its time.
Stuffing a S65B44 like engine into a F30/32 chassis would have left you with a car that performed no better than the E92. Just an upgrade in tech gadgets and sheet metal with the same performance would have buried this car. The R&D and materials that went into weight reduction cost money, and it had to come from some category. Unless you raise the base price of the car, in what other category could you have cut costs while improving performance? And without departing from the M luxo sports car formula? |

I disagree. The S65B44 engine made 30hp/20tq more at peak levels, and made more power throughout the entire power curve. That engine in the F30/F32 which still would have probably weighed less than the E90/92 chassis even with the S65B44 motor, and would have been faster, period. Maybe not earth shattering faster, but faster.
