New m4 comp feels slower than previous base m4

Have had this m4 (2018 comp) for a week now basically and have done a few races and some highway pulls my previous m4 that i got from carmax which was a base m4 non comp pulled much harder than my current one does not sure why exactly i used to walk a 392 scat packs with the old one today i barely beat a stock 392 by a few inches which was very surprising i thought the scat pack was tuned for sure but they guy kept denying either way this m4 seems to be pulling slower than my previous one even it has more power from factory

Yup they are both dct and my current even has the carbon roof but the top end pull is just not there and yeah i race traction off everytime so not sure why this one feels so much slower

Is it possible that you picked up your previous car with a tune on it?

I never checked i got the previous car through carmax so it could be possible but still today like i said i raced a 392 scatpack and i barely beat him with a few inches after going over 120-130

But then again maybe previous car was tuned idk and i am just tripping lol

your previous car was probably tuned.

the only area a stock 2015 would be faster than a comp is like around 2000-3000rpm where the early cars had the big torque shove. this was tuned out in later cars so people wouldn't crash them.

a tuned 2015 will pull harder than a comp and CS throughout the rev range. I think its a full second faster 60-130mph.

Something not right...

You should pull a scatpack no problem...

Probably the software. .

There's chatter on this forum that later versions of this car with DCT were tuned for smoother power delivery as the early versions had a very sudden and somewhat jarring surge in power and made it "more difficult" to drive at lower speeds in sport plus. Same power, just more gradual delivery to make it more "drive able"

All hearsay. But that does align with what you're experiencing. I'm sure some prefer a bit of hoonigan vs refinement. I would guess a custom tune will help align the vehicle with your intended driving style.

Yes, I've also read and seen the graphs showing the torque curve at low RPM was much steeper on the 2015 vs. a 2018 ZCP.

My 2015 felt explosive and aggressive when I first got it but but it was difficult to drive smoothly on track in some situations. When I got the first software update in 2016, it didn't feel quite as explosive and responsive but the drivability was much better. For my use it was an improvement.

Hah I read the title and thought this had to do with the G82. I was prepared for the angst and feel a bit let down!!

Physics tells us you should be beating a stock hellcat from a roll or outside any traction limiting situations, probably by a decent margin - it's simple math as your average ZCP F8X is roughly 8.2 lbs/HP (3660/444) while your average Scat is around 8.8 lbs/HP (4300/485). There's obviously more to acceleration than that (gearing, shift speed, yadayada) but those aren't limiting factors for either of these cars

Not that I really want to go there... but...

First off, how a car is broken in can affect performance. There are lots of engine builders who have proved that a car broken in hard is faster than one babied from the get go.

And...
As good as BMW is, no two engines are a like.

A long long time ago, I had a 1984 Celica GTS - in blue and then my as.. friend BOUGHT THE SAME CAR SAME COLOR - SAME YEAR.... I digress.

My car was faster. Every time we would race (closed street), he would lose. Drove him crazy. PS - yes, even if we were racing - the human eye could not tell, that car was slooowwwwwww....

and finally, as you have noted, those 2015s had more torque down low and would certainly feel faster and depending on how the race started (off the line, from a roll...)could be faster than a comp with the new tune.

I miss the low down slug of acceleration from my 15. The 18 Comp I have feels a bit stronger up top, but there’s definitely a missing “oomph” down low (both cars on stock map and never tuned). The Comp does appear to get the traction down just a bit better however, and that’s without the nannies on as I turn them off unless it’s raining. Both cars have KW V3s as well so it’s a fair comparison. I damned near prefer the base 15 however if I have to be honest, it just felt a bit more wild and I love that.

My my base 16 has that snap the rear end loose down low torque curve. Ive driven several ZCP cars and it is a very noticeable difference between the two. zcp does seem to pull a a bit harder mid range 4000-6500 to me.

For a street car... I agree and do prefer the "wild" factor of the early cars.

Yes my 2015 model was not really “drivable” in sport+ at low speeds due to lot of bucking back and forth

Not hearsay... new software definitely alters the torque curve of an early car. My 2016 LCI non-ZCP was wild at like 2000 rpm - in the wet was hard to modulate and Corollas would walk away from me.

I had the 2018 and then 2020 iStep updates applied at different points and a whole bunch of stuff kept improving (namely the gearbox smoothness, damping, steering and diff) but the biggest improvement overall was the throttle and traction control. It does have less punch now from 2000 rpm but I can now drive it hard when I'm in the mood and it won't kick about or get wayward - it feels more together "as a whole" moving about in unison, small amounts of slip being allowed, the diff punching the car straighter and the whole thing being more predictable when pushing - not punching hard then spinning the wheels and the TC cutting in abruptly as with the original iStep.

I prefer the more refined software which I agree does make me need to "reach" for the performance a little bit - it's still absolutely rapid and punches hard when in Sport+ ... it's just not spinning it's wheels when you're pulling away from the lights or bucking like a bronco

There's a very noticeable torque difference between my 2015 M4 and later ZCP models. I know it's supposed to just be at lower RPMs (around 1850) but my butt dyno says it continues all the way through the power band. That's one reason I'm keeping my '15 vs. buying a later model comp. IMHO the few upgraded changes don't make up for the feeling of raw power on early models.

Tires - What are you on now and what's the wear look like. What sizes?
Alignment - More camber, toe etc can affect "highway pulls". Some cars can be aligned more for handling than "highway pulls"
Wheels - the comp wheels are 20's and I think they weigh more
Wind/weather - wind can affect my top speed on some tracks. Some days I can't top 130, others I'll hit 140 depending on the temperature and which way the wind is blowing.
