Preventative maintenance question

I just got my regular oil change service done. Have a 2017 M3C - zero issues and only have around 33.5k km. The dealership recommended that have them perform engine coolant exchange service as a preventative measure. That’s not included in the no cost maintenance under the warranty period (I’m in my last year). Is this a preventative maintenance most are getting done? I had read other posts about potential issues with the coolant tanks. Not sure if this is a preventative service to prevent those types of issues in the future.

You could have them flush and fill the system, but to be honest they are looking for money to extract. Generally speaking, the coolant in the S55 is not a regularly serviced fluid. It does not filter contaminates, lubricate gears etc.

The coolant expansion tank does have issues with leaking at the seams, but that is a physical mechanical issue with the tank itself and replaced under warranty. Changing the coolant won't have and effect on the tank itself

If you're still under warranty, I would suggest looking into the condition of your expansion tank and having it replaced under warranty in which would be the time to flush the system because it would be opened up at that time.

Picture of a good expansion tank with no white coolant residue along it's seams.

No need for coolant flush in the S55, unlike the N55/B58 engines. Brake fluid flush is recommended every 2 years, though.

Things to replace on S55 engine on a regular basis depending on how you drive/track:

Oil
Brake fluid
Differential fluid
6sp manual transmission fluid
Spark plugs
Belt

Suspension bushings, brake pads/rotors and (valve conver, oil filter/cooler, oil pan) gaskets need to be monitored on a yearly basis for any wear!

You should also keep a eye out on your Intercooler for leaks!

Old school maintenance mentality would differ and recommend flushing the coolant every two years, regardless of vehicle make or model. Engine coolant tech (including the blue stuff BMW uses) has not changed much over the years. Despite what BMW may tell you, no fluid is a lifetime fluid. Even though it is a closed system, the fluid will still break down over time. Back in the day before "included maintenance" BMW used to recommend flushing the coolant every 2 years.

If you don't do it, not the end of the world. But typically a coolant flush/fill at the dealer is not that expensive - even by BMW standards (sub $200). And of course there is always DIY, which is my preferred method..

I saw the DIY, pretty messy lol. For sub 200 dollars would send it to the dealer.

Thanks for the picture, that is helpful, I’ll take a look.

I had the brake fluid flush done last fall, as part of the regular service. I’ll take a look at the exact wording for the recommended service (I do remember it said it is not required, but is recommended because of the coolant colour).

I did get the brakes checked as part of my service - they were good. I asked about the spark plugs, but I as told the service is not due yet. Do you know when that service is due? I had thought I had read that the spark plugs should be changed at 32k km, but I think that may have been for the Alfa Romeo QV that I was cross shopping, before getting the M3C.😁

Sparks are changed out on every 3rd oil change.

Aww, it is not that bad, especially with the right tools (like a vacuum fill tool, which I have ). But I actually had my coolant flushed following a warranty expansion tank replacement…
