Since you seem to place a great deal of weight on the opinion of Chris Harris (you quote him in your sig), you should read what he has to say about how well the M3/4 drives. For perspective.

Thanks for posting - great read!

Ok, I get the lust for N/A, high revving M engines. The S54 in my M coupe is a great piece. I like the S65 in my M5 better for a daily driver, however - and this is where these cars are going to shine. Sure, if I was blasting around the hills or Portugal or on a track all the time, I'd love the characteristics of a peaky, high-reving engine. But the reality is that most of my time with the F80 will be as a DD (shared duties with the M5 is the plan at this point), and I believe the car will absolutely be a monster in this context. The F80 sidebar in this article was spot on in my opinion. This car is what the F10 M5 should have been...sad that I don't want a new M5.

I just came out of a 2011 E92 M3 and into a 2014 M5. Never been happier. I agree about the DD character of the F8x. I think it's going to be hellacious fun.

Don't get me wrong - I think the F10 M5 is still a hell of a car! We're at the 95th percentile with these cars (kind of like arguing about wine). It's just too big for me. Hopefully I didn't offend - enjoy your F10!!

Never offended. I hope people speak their minds on here. I remember telling a colleague years ago that his E39 5-series was too big for my tastes. LOL, how things change.

Obviously the new m will be less nimble and agile. I mean it's not like it weighs less or anything. As far as excitement, sure it'll be boring as one can only feel excitement when you have no torque or power until you hit redline.

Should also be noted that much of this review is on the same track as the standalone review of the M3/M4 (http://www.carmagazine.co.uk/Drives/...14-CAR-review/) so it is not much new here.

Same comments (doesn't like the engine, thinks not as exciting) and, if you read the compilation of reviews thread (http://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=983106) definitely in the minority and among the most negative (though still objectively positive but, as others have noted, this particular reviewer has different 'buttons' and 'triggers')

first off the new car will great. the older generations are great. they all excel differently as times change.

but still one thing i dont get.....what's up with all these no torque down low comments? i mean the s65 is 300lb ft of torque from 2k all the way to redline?! are you guys in the RIGHT GEAR?!

i mean the n55 is great and FEELS torquey (get that soft shug) and my wife drives one. but have you guys launched or taken off swiftly in an s65? that shit will snap your neck compared to an n55. :

whats even more compelling to me is how does my wife understand and dislike turbo lag in the n55 and its lack of top end power (these are her words...."when i press go, how come it doesn't GO?!") and then there are DUDES on here that can't see or feel that about the all so mighty n55?

s55 i hope is another beast though. like a mixture of both engines. that would be fantastic.

Yes, it does give you pause, doesn't it? When even a numb Jag hydraulic steering is rated higher then the best of the best EPSs... God how I hate that EPS was ever invented.

blah blah blah blah...opinions are subjective...M4 still on my radar. I could care less what a "so-called" expert thinks or people who think they are experts on the M3/M4. The bottom line...is , it' s a great package for a great price!

For a car that can do it all, it's probably close to perfect...
Magazines are comparing relevant (currently or soon to be on-sale) performance cars that the public is interested in seeing stacked against each other. There's no fairness or unfairness about it. Hell, the M3 has been facing comparisons to the performance of the standard-bearer 911 since its first generation. I'm not sure why this is surprising to anyone now...

I believe the new M3/M4 with all the possible driving configurations, will take time to be appreciated.

Some will always moan about the loss of the N/A V8 (heck even some still moan about M3's not driving like the 1st generation), but there's no denying that torque = real world driveability.

And as a do it all family AND sports car (in particular the M3), it's pretty hard to beat. And it looks like we can drive her like a camry if we want to and, the next minute, drift her with abandon, just at the touch of an M button...

Bravo for the M4, now being compared to cars costing 40% more. Its also not even worth reviewing against the C63 or RS4 This 911S vs a 40% more 911 Turbo which would be better, might be the Turbo

Also what's the 0-62 of an M3/4 with DCT please Car Magazine, what's that 4.3 seconds errrmm nope?

Thanks OP for posting I enjoyed the read. All fine cars, looks great in the photos.

Angry

First impressions are everything

Scott said back in the day that not everyone would like the f8x

Is the car just too good it became bland in some regards

I have feelings based on time in f3x that the new car is fast but doesn't feel as fast and is more isolated and Cush than would be expected

I do feel the new generation emphasized that you are getting something that justifies the price especially in the f1x serie

I think for some this will be the best car ever built and for some a feminine dream

There is still something putting me off about the car but I still need to drive it

It's actually £23k but your point is still just as valid.

IMO most people shopping the M4 view the 911 as an aspirational car. Which kind of matches the comparo result.

What someone else said though, doesn't look like this M is going to whup the opposition quite as consistently as it's dad and grandad did.

I love my V8 M3 so yes I'm disappointed in the S55 engine sound.

550HP TT 4.0 V8 AMG GT for $120KUSD vs. ~$95k optioned up M4. Hrm.
