Carbon Fiber Roof Keyed!

Some a$$hole decided to key the roof of my M3 while I was grabbing coffee this morning. The irony is this is only the 4th time driving the car since Thanksgiving and it gets keyed.

Any experiences on repair/insurance claims on the roof? I don't believe it went through the clear but hard to tell.

As long as it didn't damage the actual carbon which I doubt it did, it's better than getting paint keyed especially on a big panel like the hood. I think redoing the clear is a couple hundred and maybe if it wasn't deep it'll just polish/buff out, but might be wrong about the last part lol

Damn it sucks but I agree with the poster above. this should be an easy fix and also will help prolong the life of the roof since for some owners in sunnier states, the factory clear peels over time.

Wtf is wrong with people
This is why we can't have nice things
Sorry to hear it happened to you
If it is not too deep and cut and polish might do the job

Any clue why? Did they not like your park job? Or maybe they felt you did something to them? And yes we want pics. And I wonder if the coffee place has cameras...

How did you even notice? You check every time before getting in the car?

Maybe I should go check mine....been 2 years since I've looked at it

Waiting for the sunroof owners to weigh in on the intelligence of their option choice!

In all seriousness sorry OP, that’s terrible to hear. The carbon roof is beautiful and obviously some hater knew exactly what it was!

I think all of us internet FBI agents & detectives want more of the story on this deal.

What an odd thing to key.

Any shops around which might have surveillance video?

By clear coat do you mean the actual clear coat on top of the epoxy layer or the epoxy layer itself? The former would be a buff & polish, the latter would probably require a sand & fill with epoxy resin then clear coat overtop. Sucks this happened though - some people are just scum of the earth. FWIW I’ve seen on this forum people have re-epoxied their carbon roof and it looks perfect so there is hope!

Pics

No idea why someone would do such a thing - didn't really even see another car on the road morning and there was only one car at the store when I arrived (he lot was full after my order). I live in a small community where 1/2 the population is very affluent and 1/2 is quite poor (almost no middle class).

Several years ago my neighbor (in another state) was crazy and keyed my 1M because she didn't like that I rarely drove my car (I worked from home) and always had the best parking space (right outside my balcony) at the condo complex we lived in at the time (while my wife was in medical fellowship).

I know it is "keyed" because (1) it is deep and (2) the "jog" in the line (something in my other keying experience) people can't do a straight line.

I noticed it as it is right above the drivers door and I was fumbling with two coffee while opening the door.

Had one recently like that in for a service, I wet sanded it with 3000 grit and machine polished it out with Gyeon 2QM then Gyeon primer, scratch and clear coat now perfect.
Just go lightly on polisher with the Q2M or go straight to the Gyeon primer and do 2 or 3 passes, finish should look perfect.

Was a falling tree branch that damaged it during high winds.

People are disgusting! Luckily I think a good body shop familiar with composites should be able to make it as good as new or better!

Ouch, lots of jealous mofos these days, you better claim that in your insurance to fix or replace that me get ppf put on the car. The only reason to get ppf on the car to avoid these scenarios especially if you plan on keeping the car.

Luckily that's not too bad. I had a piece of concrete hit the CF roof on my NSX. It left a gouge about three inches long, by a quarter inch wide, about 1mm deep. I had PPF put on the roof over it and you couldn't tell there was any damage.

People are such jerks these days, yikes. No matter what their reasoning is, no one has the right to mess with others' cars. Hope you get it fixed soon!

Do you mean because it's hard to see being on the roof? I put a deep and wide scratch n my rear bumper. It would be great if PPF would be a solution to hide it.

Sorry to hear about this, OP.

Karma will take care of them. And if they're that miffed about you having a nice car, they're probably not going places in life anyway.

They would have to look at it and tell you. Since the film does have a thickness to it, it may be able to cover it over. Mine was pretty bad and you couldn't tell the CF was scratched. And the roof of my NSX was much easier to see than a BMW.
