Apple Carplay

Having a lot of trouble with my Apple Car Play. Sometimes it just doesn’t want to connect and sometimes it works perfectly. Sometimes it connects but will only play my Amazon music for a short duration of time and restart the track. Now it’s also not showing me the weather feature for the split screen like it did before. I have been using an iPhone 13 max… and it was working fine with it in the past.

Anyone know how to fix this? It’s so frustrating!

I have connected to both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.

Oh, and it’s a 2019 M4

You can try rebooting the iDrive system and also un-pair/re-pair your mobile device.

Did your vehicle already come with CarPlay installed or did you activate it yourself?

It came on the car….

If you mean rebooting the idrive system … I did go to idrive and tried to toggle things on and off in addition to forgetting the device on my phone and repairing… but no luck. I’m so frustrated.

How would you specifically reboot the idrive system?

What I do usually is
1) Igniton ON
2) On iPhone, navigate to Settings > General > CarPlay, then select your vehicle
3) Complete the CarPlay process through iDrive via Manage Devices > add CarPlay device

If rebooting and re-pairing doesn’t work, all I can think of next is making sure both the iDrive and your iPhone’s software are updated. And making sure your iPhone CarPlay settings aren’t restricted. Lastly, if your vehicle doesn’t have a wi-fi antenna I would highly suggest installing one.

It was working fine before without any added Wi-Fi antennas.

Could resetting the computer have downgraded the OS on the car

IPhone software is up to date.

How can I check if iPhone car play settings are restricted??

Thanks … I am beyond frustrated.
The weather setting from the right side of car play is missing
The Amazon songs stop playing after a finite amount of the time.

On the other hand, re: Apple car play…
Waze is working from what I can tell.
I am able to make phone calls

Other than that… it’s a glitchy hunk of shit as far as I’m concerned.

Just updated iphone to iOS 16, and got the music playing again without turning off. Still there is no weather option for the split screen. It would be nice to have that like I was able to before on the right of the apple car play screen, but it appears to no longer be an option. Any thoughts?

No particular method to check really. Literally just combing through all the app settings and permissions relating to CarPlay to see if there's anything could be a culprit.

The reboot process I mentioned only powers OFF/ON the computer, does not downgrade/revert back the Idrive software.

That's a step in the right direction. As for the weather option, not sure myself as I don't use weather on my setup. I feel like it could be setting/option on Idrive itself.

You can also check the if your Idrive software is update through here - https://www.bmw.com/en/footer/software-updates.html

Are you supposed to be able to use apple Apple CarPlay and Idrive at the same time?

It seems like when I try to add one and then the other … the previous is disabled. Ex. Add Apple Car play, then try to enable iDrive… then Apple CarPlay gets disabled.

It started cutting out on music again later today.

This is getting incredibly annoying. Is this a known issue with the f82

Well, the car ran ApplePlay without any problems today, and looked at the phone - I wasn’t connected to Bluetooth, just Wi-Fi. Is this normal? Am I lacking any features… or is it all about having the Wi-Fi connected?

On another note, sigh, I just got the car ceramic coated, and when I was doing my first wash, I noticed that someone hit and ran… back quarter panel extending to trunk and part of wheel. I’m livid. After doing my damndest to do everything great, some clueless inconsiderate driver swipes the back of my car. I just hope insurance will cover everything including the reapplication of ceramic coating.

It might be a loose or broken WiFi antenna behind your head unit. You may want to take it out and replace the antenna for good measure.

When I retrofit CarPlay into my car, I bought a new antenna and installed it.

It’s under warranty, so they should take care of it if it persists.

The question is .. does Bluetooth have to be on for any reason … because it seemed to be running fine the other day with just the Wi-Fi connected. What’s the point of the car showing up under the Bluetooth menu?

CarPlay does not need bluetooth, but relies on wi-fi connectivity. If i'm not mistaken BMW's "My BMW" app uses bluetooth. So if you have the My BMW app and CarPlay it's possible it's causing a connection gremlins between the two.

I had the same issue.

Ever since I got a mount for my phone (the magnet ones that connect to the air vent), I had zero issues. It has to be an issue with range, and since the phone is now always right next to the head unit I've had no issues.

Could be related to your battery. Maybe you're running out of juice.

You could try disconnecting and reconnecting your negative terminal of the battery in the trunk area. And see if that helps. Also, does your car crank easier? Or it takes or struggles bit on cold start?

I think this was the issue. I was trying to connect both.

And the AppleCarplay issues have not stopped.

I noticed the entire top bar of buttons on Amazon music were blurred out even though I could still select them.

The music from Amazon’s app would stop every time I went to Waze as my default screen with music playing in the background - this usually took about a minute.

At this point I am wondering if this is an iOS 16.02 issue or a CarPlay issue with the car that needs to be updated at the dealership.

Is anyone else experiencing these problems?

I was thinking of switching to Apple Maps, if that works, because it also has the road indications - hazards, speed traps, traffic..

But this problem should really not be occurring.

I noticed when I open the Apple Maps app, that it asks for a location immediately… is there anyway to just cruise with the map on without putting in directions?

Found this….

My brother is also experiencing the same issue in his VW with CarPlay and an iPhone 12. What the heck is going on people?!
