Öh My - Ohlins TTX Coilovers F80 M3 / F82 M4

Excuse our hiatus, but our F80 M3 has been gone for a good reason.

For the past 6 weeks, our M3 has been up at Sonoma Raceway, in the hands of the suspension gurus themselves, Performance Shock Inc. There, they achieved greatness. Our F80 was fitted with the ultimate suspension setup for street and track use.The Öhlins TTX Suspension System.

Size: 64.0 KB

This kit is built using Ohlins TTX46 front and TTX36 rear dampers which are based upon the tremendously successful TTX40 damper design that captured top results in the LeMans, ChampCar, WTCC series etc.

Name: ohlins-f8x-3.jpg
Views: 22226
Size: 62.4 KB

It features a twin tube design providing positive pressure build-up and has proven itself far superior to conventional techniques used in other racing dampers.

Low internal friction, vast adjustment range and responsiveness even at the smallest strokes are among its virtues. The standard configuration is 2-way adjustable; 1-way compression and 1-way rebound (low speed), but is easily upgradeable to 3 or even 4-way adjustable. A major advantage with the TTX36 inline damper is the integral reservoir that makes it very compact and easy to package (front damper).

The top eye can easily be re-clocked without opening the damper. No longer is the balancing of reservoir damping ("can stack") to main piston damping required to avoid cavitation. With no reservoir valve, the internal pressure of the damper unit will be kept to a minimum. The low amount of hysteresis results in excellent short stroke/high force performance. The Ohlins TTX range of shocks require very low gas pressure which considerably improves grip without any loss of damping performance.

We've had the car back for a week now, and we can without doubt tell you that this suspension system has blown us away. The already nimble M3 has been transformed into a perfectly comfortable street car with a suspension setup that is capable of incredible responsiveness. The springs are indeed stiffer at the front, but PSi has setup the rear similarly, at 450lb/in at the front and 500 lb/in at the rear, compared to the 160 and 550, respectively.

Now the handling... well, the handling.

Out of this world. Not that the M3 needs that much improvement, but the car is absolutely flat through the corners, understeer is a word that can be thrown out of the dictionary, and the chassis responds like an extension of the driver.

We will be exploring the new limits of the car tomorrow at Thermal Club, and we will add to this thread after the weekend. The HG F80 M3 will be displayed at Bimmerfest this year, with its beautiful HRE wheels unmounted, and on jackstands, to display the Öhlins TTX system on the car. The following day, we will be giving rides to those who want it at Willow Springs Raceway.

To those attending, please don't hesitate to come by our booth and ask any questions!

See you all this weekend!

Just to clarify guys, this is NOT the Road & Track system.
This is the Raceline system custom valved and sprung by Performance Shock Inc, and it utilizes the TTX40 based shock system. Each Raceline systemis valved and sprung for each individual application, so the system can achieve anything from complete comfort and proper handling to race-only applications.

Sweet, finally some "real" Ohlins shocks on these platforms

Just wondering, what camber plates were those on this kit?

It will clear 10 inch wheels up front with those offsets. This car has 9.5 and et24 upfront and it's got plenty room.

The production kit will be available in about 4-5 weeks. Expect this kit to cost around $10k.

We still waiting for a definitive answer regarding max and min drops. Max should be just around 30mm.

The camber plates on this particular kit is a TC Kline setup. The production unit will have Ground Control units or TC Kline ones.

Garage List
The rear spring rates are very low compared to other set ups. What is the reason for this? Are you trying to dial back oversteer?

Thank you

I don't think the rear spring rates can be compared to other kits because it looks like they went with a true coil-over-strut route for the rear.

Good catch, didn't notice that. A high spring rates is no longer needed due to motion ratio of the shocks are much closer to 1 than it would be at the factory spring mounts. To be clear, the EFFECTIVE springs rate at the stock spring locations would be nearly half of the actual spring rates, while the effective spring rates of springs mounted with the shock as a true spring over shock setup would be 80-90% of the actual spring rates.

However, I would be very wary of such setup without reinforcing the rear shock towers, as in stock forms, they weren't designed to take the load of the whole car.

I was going to say the exact same thing regarding enforcing the rear shock towers.

I wouldn't worry about it based on the design of the rear shock mount on the F8X. I have true rear coilover on my E46 with minimal reinforcement and it hasn't been an issue.
