No longer hearing turbos in my new M4 CS
Hey guys. New here to the forum and to the BMW world. I came from a '17 GT350 and absolutely enjoyed the sound, and one of the things that I loved the most about the M4 CS considering the lack of v8 is the sound of the turbos.
I just finished going through the service break-in period yesterday (dealership did it at 850 miles while they were replacing a broken hose under warranty) and this morning I drove the car and was a little surprised. I no longer heard the "woosh" that I heard initially under heavy throttle. So now it just sounds like any other car from the inside. Is there anything that the dealership does during the service break in period that affects the sound by chance? From what I understand, the service break in period is just simply flushing out fluids and some say "a little more power". I did a little bit of research and learned about active sound design (ASD), but I don't know if this is something that is even in the M4 CS and, if so, if it was just maybe disabled during the break-in period. I also don't think I can hear it much with the windows down either. Any thoughts would greatly appreciated! I'd love to hear this sound a LOT more, even more than when I bought it... without having warranty issues of course. |

Get aftermarket intakes
Nothing to worry about warranty wise with those. Sometimes I go from Sport+ to Sport just to stop hearing spool all day and hear the exhaust, then I remember why I keep it in Sport+

It's a matter of opinion, but the car sounds MUCH more natural with the ASD coded off. That being said, on the outside it will still sound like a swarm of bees that had chili for dinner, but at least it's improved in the cabin. |

Biggest disappointment with this car is when I realized I couldn't put BOVs on it that vent to the atmosphere. I'm 43 years old and will never lose the love of those annoying ass (to most people) things. hah

Thanks a lot guys! I definitely appreciated the turbo sounds considering the adjustment for the GT350. It made up for it, a lot!! Lol. I've seen some people get aftermarket cold air intakes in the mustang world and it didn't really make much of a difference tbh, not the kind of sound I'm looking to get back at least. Especially if we're talking about the little baby "woosh" from the intake. Never heard an aftermarket on one this car though so I'm not sure.
Yes!! Me too. I don't think I'll ever get tired of it. I don't want to sound all crazy and ridiculous or anything, but man it's nice to hear the turbos in this car when they're loud enough in the cabin. |

I found ASD terribly annoying on my previous 2015 M4 and also coded it out. On that car, it was very noticible. Not the same case on the M4cs.

OP, simply removing the carcoal filters from the intake air box with significantly increase the turbo spooling sound. I did this on my M4cs. If you so desire, you can also replace the stock paper filters for aftermarket ones that will increase the sound further.

Did you end up moving to a CAI after this? On the fence about getting BMC filters if I'm going to end up wanting a CAI down the road...

Hmm, interesting. Good to know. I guess my biggest question though is why do I not hear it anymore? I heard it before the service break in and now I literally don't hear it even a little bit. It's not even that it got quiet, I just simply don't hear it. The car does feel a little different (more powerful or maybe it's just psychological since the service break-in) but why do I not hear it at all anymore?

No, I just stayed with the stock paper filters.

Nothing done during the break-in service would have anything to do with the ability to hear the sound from the turbo. What was the hose that was replaced? Are you sure it wasn't a vacuum leak you were hearing?

Honestly I would say that about the exhaust but the sounds under the hood were extremely noticeable. It went from very noticeable to not noticeable at all literally within like a day. It was actually really loud in the cabin under heavy load.

Thanks for bringing that up man. Makes sense now. Could this also have resulted in less power, which is why I think I feel more power now? |
